‘Chicago Fire’ Enters a New Chapter With Changes On Screen and Behind the Camera

The question of who is leaving ‘Chicago Fire’ has a longer answer than usual this fall. The series was renewed for a fifteenth season that was set to premiere on October 7, and the new episodes arrive with turnover both inside Firehouse 51 and in the production office.

Taken together, the changes amount to a quiet changing of the guard. The veteran NBC series is losing its showrunner, a chief has already left the firehouse, and an original cast member is preparing to step away over the course of several episodes.

Joe Cruz Exit Ends an Original Run

Joe Minoso originated the role of Joe Cruz in the series premiere back in 2012. Cruz began as a recurring presence and was promoted to series regular in the second season. His departure removes one of the few actors who have been there since the beginning.

The exit will not happen all at once. He will leave after a handful of episodes, according to Deadline. All signs point toward Minoso exiting in the 300th episode, which airs as the fifth episode of the season, putting his final appearance on Wednesday, November 4.

The cliffhanger that closed the previous season raised obvious fears about the character’s fate. The finale left Cruz in danger during a storage facility fire, and the premiere confirmed that he survived but at a major cost. That outcome fits the expectation that Cruz will not be written out through a death.

Those involved are already shaping expectations for the farewell. New showrunner Victor Teran warned viewers not to expect a tidy resolution. Hanako Greensmith, who plays Violet Mikami, has described the exit storyline as heartfelt and warm.

Chief Pascal Departure Closes a Leadership Chapter

The firehouse had already lost its top officer before the new season began. Dermot Mulroney’s Chief Dom Pascal exited midway through the previous season after his job at the CFD was terminated for conduct unbecoming a firefighter. That outcome followed his decision to disobey FBI orders during the One Chicago crossover.

The new season wasted little time in addressing his fate. The first episode resolved the cliffhanger by showing Pascal one last time in a heartfelt conversation with Severide before he left the series. For a character whose arc turned on a single moral line, the scene offered a measured sendoff.

Mulroney has also reflected on his time with the show in public. Speaking at a Chicago horror convention in August, he said he loved every minute he spent on screen. That reaction suggests the departure was handled on good terms.

The series has handled leadership exits before. Teran has pointed to earlier goodbyes delivered through death, through Boden’s looser farewell, and through Casey’s family storyline. Eamonn Walker stepped back from his role as Boden after twelve seasons in a decision that was his own, which shows how often the firehouse has had to reinvent itself.

Victor Teran Takes Over as Showrunner

The most significant change may be the one viewers never see. As first reported by Deadline, Andrea Newman has been on the series for its entire run and is leaving after serving as showrunner for the past three seasons. She is believed to be departing of her own accord.

Her successor is already familiar with the production. Victor Teran has been on ‘Chicago Fire’ since the tenth season, in his first television series job, and was named executive producer and showrunner for the new season. That internal promotion points toward continuity rather than reinvention.

Newman’s own words reflect how she viewed the job. She described working on the series alongside the cast and crew as the highlight of her career. The show’s stability also matters here, since all three ‘Chicago’ series have been renewed for the new television season.

The 300th Episode and the Cast Beyond the Exits

The departures are being balanced by new faces and renewed commitments. The season introduces Da’Vinchi as new firefighter Marcus Burke. The actor was recruited as a series regular, and Taylor Kinney and Miranda Rae Mayo negotiated new deals to remain on the show.

The milestone episode is positioned as an event in its own right. The 300th episode is set to take place as the fifth episode of the season, and it is expected to bring back faces fans have not seen for some time. That timing places Cruz’s goodbye inside a larger celebration of the series.

The show’s original core is now thinner than it has ever been. Taylor Kinney’s Kelly Severide, David Eigenberg’s Christopher Herrmann and Christian Stolte’s Mouch remain among those who have been there since the pilot. Whether the 300th episode gives Cruz the farewell his place in Firehouse 51 deserves, and which returning faces would mean the most to you in that final scene, is a conversation worth having in the comments.
