Chris Evans Admits The Russo Brothers Are Not Going Easy On Steve Rogers In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Chris Evans spent years turning down the chance to put the shield back on. After ‘Avengers: Endgame’ sent Steve Rogers into a quiet retirement, Marvel reportedly kept circling back with new ideas, and Evans kept saying no, unwilling to risk cheapening an ending fans had already accepted.
That resistance is part of what makes his ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ comeback feel like such a big deal. Evans has said that over roughly eight years he fielded at least a dozen pitches for Steve Rogers, and while he considered them wonderful, none of them ever quite felt right. In a post shared by DiscussingFilm, Evans said Steve Rogers’ journey in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is brutal and a really good examination into his nature and his values, adding that the Russos love beating up Steve Rogers and that their favorite thing to do is just beat the crap out of him.
That tracks with what Evans has said elsewhere about how directors Joe and Anthony Russo approach the character. According to those comments, the filmmakers have built Steve’s arc around his ability to withstand extraordinary pain and pressure without abandoning what he believes in, testing him physically and emotionally to show why he keeps fighting for justice. Evans has made clear the struggles awaiting Steve this time are worse than anything the character has faced before.
Part of the intrigue is exactly what version of Steve Rogers audiences will get, since he handed the shield to Sam Wilson at the end of ‘Endgame.’ Anthony Mackie has weighed in on that question, telling Variety that Steve Rogers is not reclaiming the Captain America mantle and instead pointing fans toward his comic book identity as Nomad for context. It is a detail that lines up with longstanding rumors that Steve’s post ‘Endgame’ life, including his marriage to Peggy Carter, will factor heavily into his ‘Doomsday’ arc.
The stakes around this return are enormous given the scale of the project itself. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing from a screenplay by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, with Kevin Feige producing alongside the Russos, and filming wrapped after a 2025 shoot at Pinewood Studios in England. Marvel is positioning ‘Doomsday’ as something of a reset for the franchise, leaning on Downey’s turn as Doctor Doom and a fresh generation of heroes to reignite box office momentum after a rocky stretch for the MCU.
