Marvel’s mutants are finally getting their moment in the MCU. At D23 in August, Marvel Studios confirmed the first cast for Jake Schreier’s ‘X-Men’ reboot, revealing Christopher Abbott as the new Charles Xavier. He joins Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Maya Boyd as Storm, with Adam Driver playing Mr. Sinister.

The casting makes Abbott the third actor to play Professor X in a live-action film, following Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy. The reboot is set to arrive in May 2028, but 2 massive Marvel crossovers stand in the way first: ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on December 18 and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027.

That gap has fueled plenty of speculation. Marvel has a long track record of introducing new characters through surprise appearances before their own films, and saga-ending events like ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ are traditionally packed with crossover moments.

Now Abbott has addressed the theory head-on, and his answer was refreshingly direct. In an interview published by Rolling Stone on October 25, the actor was asked whether fans should expect to see his Xavier in any cameos before the ‘X-Men’ movie. “I don’t think so. Well, I don’t even know what’s happening… I’m not in that. I gotta do the ‘X-Men’ movie first before any of that stuff,” Abbott told Rolling Stone.

The interviewer pushed back, pointing out that launching a character without a prior cameo isn’t how Marvel typically operates. Abbott laughed and doubled down, insisting he wasn’t being coy and that he is simply not in ‘Doomsday’.

His response stands out in an era when actors are often trained to deflect questions about secret Marvel appearances. Abbott left very little room for interpretation. There’s good reason to take Abbott at his word. Patrick Stewart is already confirmed to return as Professor X in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, meaning Marvel doesn’t need a second Xavier to anchor the X-Men side of the story.

Stewart previously played an alternate version of the character in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, and trailers for ‘Doomsday’ have already featured the original X-Men cast. That includes Ian McKellen’s Magneto and James Marsden’s Cyclops, positioning the film as something of a send-off for the Fox-era mutants.

If Abbott sits out the crossover, Stewart’s Xavier will carry that legacy alone. Fans will have to wait for the reboot to get their first real look at the new Professor X. Abbott’s comments focused on ‘Doomsday’, but his remark about doing the ‘X-Men’ movie first suggests he isn’t expecting to show up in ‘Secret Wars’ either. Still, with that film more than a year away and no trailers released, some fans may hold out hope for a surprise.

For now, Abbott’s message is clear: his version of Charles Xavier belongs to the new ‘X-Men’ film, not the crossover events that come before it. The approach could actually benefit the reboot. By saving its new Professor X for his own story, Marvel can give the youth-focused ‘X-Men’ a clean introduction rather than relying on a quick tease in someone else’s movie.

Abbott has been building an impressive résumé, including his recent role in Netflix’s acclaimed ‘East of Eden’ alongside Florence Pugh. Fans will be eager to see how he puts his stamp on one of Marvel’s most iconic characters.

Are you disappointed that Christopher Abbott’s Professor X won’t appear in Avengers: Doomsday?
