Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Just Became His Biggest Movie Ever, And The Numbers Are Staggering

Christopher Nolan has spent decades building a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most reliable box office draws, turning dense, ambitious concepts into must see theatrical events. Imax auditoriums in major markets like Los Angeles and New York have been running at near sellout capacity through October. For a three hour, R rated adaptation of a nearly three thousand year old poem, that kind of sustained demand is remarkable.

The current worldwide total breaks down to roughly 461.1 million dollars domestically and 643.6 million dollars internationally after four weekends in release. That places ‘The Odyssey’ as the second biggest movie of the year so far, trailing only ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ and it now ranks as the second highest grossing R rated release of all time behind 2024’s ‘Deadpool and Wolverine.’ The film has also reportedly become the highest grossing movie of Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson’s careers worldwide.

Nolan’s films have now grossed a combined 7 billion dollars globally, with ‘The Odyssey,’ ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ all crossing the billion dollar mark. The rollout is far from over either, with the film still set to open in China on August 14 followed by Japan in September. Jim Orr, President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution at Universal Pictures, said Nolan has earned audiences’ trust by consistently delivering must see theatrical events, calling ‘The Odyssey’ the director operating at the peak of his powers, according to a statement shared by Deadline.

Considering the film’s box office run is nowhere near winding down, these numbers are likely to keep climbing before the year is out.
