Christopher Nolan Will Tackle ‘The Odyssey’ with a Fantastical Twist, Reports Say
A few days ago news broke that Nolan’s mysterious upcoming project is an adaptation of ‘The Odyssey.’ Universal Pictures announced that Christopher Nolan’s next movie is a global action epic based on Homer’s ‘The Odyssey.’ It will use new IMAX technology and hit theaters on July 17, 2026.
The movie already has a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. Production is expected to begin in early 2025, with Nolan writing and producing alongside Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner.
Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ is one of the oldest stories still read today. It tells the tale of the Greek hero Odysseus and his challenging journey home after the Trojan War.
Now industry insider Daniel Richtman shared some news regarding the production of the movie. Richtman believes Universal revealed the project to prevent leaks. The movie is expected to feature major stars, with casting news coming soon. Unlike grounded adaptations like ‘Troy,’ Nolan will embrace the mythical and fantastical elements of ‘The Odyssey,’ marking a new direction for him.
A few days ago, I started hearing that they were casting multiple new roles for Nolan’s next film, specifically for Greek characters. I didn’t know it was The Odyssey, but that was a big clue. I assume that’s why Universal went ahead and revealed it—they knew it was going to leak.
I’m hearing that other big names are involved in the film, and casting announcements should come soon. I also hear this won’t be a grounded take on the story, like Troy. Nolan will remain faithful to the more fantastical nature of The Odyssey, which is a first for him, as even his sci-fi films tend to feel somewhat grounded in reality.
Tom Holland revealed he joined Christopher Nolan’s new project without knowing much about it. On a podcast, he said Nolan gave a brief pitch but has kept details quiet. The actor is excited and trusts Nolan to share more when the time is right.
So far the director has been tight-lipped about the whole project, but considering Universal’s speculated strategy to limit leaks, we can probably expect more soon.
