Circe Actress Samantha Morton Says Nolan’s Epic Gave Her Career a Whole New Chapter

‘The Odyssey’ has spent weeks racking up headlines for its sprawling ensemble, and the buzz has only grown louder since the film’s release. With names like Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland and Zendaya splashed across the marketing, few expected a supporting player to become the film’s biggest talking point.

Morton described identifying deeply with the character, saying Circe felt like her sister, her mother, her gran, her aunt and her neighbor, someone who felt real and condensed despite limited screen time. She praised how fully realized Nolan made all the women in the film, noting that Circe never feels rushed even in her short window on screen.

The scene itself, in which Circe welcomes the shipwrecked survivors of Odysseus’s crew before turning on them, has become one of the film’s most discussed sequences. Morton spent roughly ten days shooting the Circe sequence and joked she did not want to leave the set once filming wrapped. She also revealed to TODAY.com that a standout moment in the scene, which audiences assume is CGI, was actually achieved practically.

After decades of acclaimed work in projects like ‘The Whale’, ‘She Said’ and ‘The Serpent Queen’, Morton admitted that this level of attention from a filmmaker like Nolan has been an emotional validation of her career. With ‘The Odyssey’ now playing in theaters and introducing her work to a massive new audience, it’s clear Circe’s brief stay on Odysseus’s journey has left a lasting mark far beyond the screen.
