Could ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Ditch December 18 to Dodge a Head-On Collision With ‘Dune: Part Three’?
Marvel’s next mega crossover has been building toward this moment for years, ever since Robert Downey Jr. walked onto the Hall H stage as the villainous Doctor Doom. The return of the Russo brothers as directors, along with the casting of Downey and the new subtitle Doomsday, was officially announced in July 2024, kicking off one of the most ambitious production efforts in the studio’s history.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has assembled a sprawling ensemble that blends the classic Avengers lineup with faces from the X-Men franchise and the Fantastic Four, and it is currently locked into a December 18, 2026 release. Following its release, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to enter a relative pause with a handful of Disney Plus series filling the gap before Doctor Doom returns in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027. That same December weekend also happens to belong to Warner Bros, which has ‘Dune: Part Three’ opening on the exact same day, a pairing fans have jokingly nicknamed Dunesday.
Now a new wrinkle has entered the conversation. Entertainment commentator John Campea has reported that Marvel executives have had early, non committal conversations internally about pulling the film’s release date up by one week, moving it from December 18 to December 11. According to Campea, a contact in exhibitor relations described the talks as very preliminary, though nothing has been finalized or announced by either studio.
The motivation behind such a shift appears to come down to premium screens rather than box office fear. Reports indicate that ‘Dune: Part Three’ has locked up a large share of IMAX screens for its release window, screens that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ would not have access to if both films open on the same day. Moving a week earlier would let Marvel claim a stretch of IMAX exclusivity before Denis Villeneuve’s sequel takes over those same auditoriums.
There is also a convenient scheduling gap making the move plausible. A listing tied to a UK premiere events supplier has pointed to a possible London premiere for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in early December, and the date shuffle became easier to imagine after Sony moved its own December tentpole away from December 11 and over to Christmas Day, freeing up a coveted pre holiday weekend that Marvel could slide into.
This would not be the film’s first schedule change. Filming took place from April to September 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, with additional location work in Bahrain, and the movie had already been pushed from an earlier planned date to December 18, 2026 to give the production more time to finish. Momentum has been building since then, with early box office tracking described as strong enough that some analysts believe ‘Doomsday’ could end up as 2026’s highest grossing film.
For now, nothing is official, and Marvel Studios has not commented publicly on any potential change. Until an announcement arrives, the film remains booked for December 18, leaving fans to debate whether Doctor Doom’s big screen debut is better served squaring off against ‘Dune: Part Three’ or grabbing a solo victory lap the week before.
