Could Spider-Man Really Beat Green Lantern? ‘Lanterns’ Cast Answers
The cast of HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ recently found themselves answering one of those superhero questions that fans love to argue about. If Tom Holland’s Spider-Man went up against a Green Lantern, who would actually win?
Aaron Pierre, Kyle Chandler and Kelly Macdonald were asked about the matchup while promoting the new DC series, and their reactions made it pretty clear where they stand. None of them seemed especially convinced that Spider-Man could take down a Green Lantern in a straight fight.
At first glance, Spider-Man would seem like a serious opponent. Holland’s version of Peter Parker is incredibly strong, fast, and agile. His spider-sense allows him to react to attacks before they happen, while his web shooters give him another useful weapon. He has also gone up against some extremely powerful enemies over the years.
Still, the ‘Lanterns’ cast believes the Green Lantern’s power set would be too much for him. Pierre plays John Stewart in the series, while Chandler takes on the role of Hal Jordan. Both characters are members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic group that uses powerful rings to protect the universe. Their rings can create weapons, shields, vehicles and almost anything else their users can imagine.
That gives Green Lantern a major advantage in a fight against Spider-Man. The discussion was shared during interviews surrounding ‘Lanterns,’ which follows Stewart and Jordan as they investigate a strange case in a small Nebraska town. Instead of being a traditional space-based superhero story, the series mixes the DC mythology with a grounded crime mystery.
Pierre plays the younger Stewart, who is still finding his place within the Green Lantern Corps. Chandler’s Jordan is the more experienced hero, giving the pair a very different dynamic as they work together on the investigation.
Kelly Macdonald also stars as Sheriff Kerry, a local law enforcement officer who becomes involved in the mystery. Nathan Fillion appears as Guy Gardner, another well-known Green Lantern character. The cast also includes Laura Linney, Poorna Jagannathan and Garret Dillahunt.

The series was created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, with Mundy serving as showrunner. According to the information surrounding the series, ‘Lanterns’ premiered on HBO and HBO Max on August 16 and has been releasing episodes weekly.
The Spider-Man comparison is especially interesting because Holland’s version of the character has become one of Marvel’s biggest stars. Spider-Man has survived fights against powerful villains and has even stood alongside some of the MCU’s strongest heroes.
But Green Lantern operates on a different level. A Lantern ring isn’t simply a weapon. Its abilities are limited largely by the user’s imagination, willpower and skill. A powerful Lantern can create enormous constructs, protect themselves with energy shields and attack opponents from a distance.
Spider-Man’s speed and spider-sense could make him difficult to hit, but getting close to a Green Lantern would be another matter entirely. Of course, there is no official answer because Marvel and DC have never put these two versions of the characters against each other. The matchup remains purely hypothetical.
