Daemon and Ormund Face Off in Chilling New ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Photo
‘House of the Dragon’ has spent the first two episodes of Season 3 blowing up the board, and fans are still catching their breath. Rhaenyra Targaryen finally seized King’s Landing, and the fallout left almost nobody untouched, from a beheaded Otto Hightower to a queen dowager taken prisoner.
With the dust barely settled in the Red Keep, the show is already turning its attention outward, toward the armies still loyal to the Greens. That shift comes into sharp focus with a newly surfaced image making the rounds online, and it has fans buzzing about what comes next.
The account Thrones Updates shared a striking photo showing Daemon Targaryen and Ormund Hightower standing face to face in an open field, flanked by rows of armored soldiers, teasing what looks like a tense confrontation between the two forces in Episode 3. Out of the 23 first-look photos HBO released for the episode, only three take place outside King’s Landing, and all three capture this meeting between Daemon and Ormund. Notably, Ormund shows up with his entire army while Daemon arrives with nothing but his dragon Caraxes, an imbalance that says plenty about the power dynamics at play.
The stakes behind this meeting run deeper than a simple show of force. In the Episode 3 preview, Daemon reminds Rhaenyra that securing her claim to the throne means dealing with Daeron, the youngest son of Alicent and Viserys, who remains under Ormund’s protection out in the field. Matt Smith’s voice can even be heard warning that Daeron is a claimant to the throne who will have to be killed, leaving little doubt about how seriously the Blacks are treating the threat.
That confrontation also doubles as a long-awaited introduction. This marks the first time Daeron Targaryen has been fully featured on screen since ‘House of the Dragon’ began, appearing alongside his blue dragon Tessarion in a field full of Hightower soldiers. Daeron has technically existed within the story since the premiere, serving as Ormund’s squire in Oldtown, but he has remained just out of frame until now.’
Not everything may be as it seems, though. Part of the Episode 3 preview reportedly teases a “fake Daeron” being presented to Daemon, hinting that the Hightowers may be attempting some form of deception rather than a straightforward handover. Whether that theory holds up once the episode airs remains to be seen, but it adds another layer of intrigue to an already loaded standoff.
Fans have wasted no time speculating about how the meeting will actually play out. Some point out that Daemon rarely shows restraint when someone threatens Rhaenyra’s claim, while others argue the new queen may have given very different orders behind the scenes. Episode 3 is set to premiere on July 5, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
Do you think Daemon will show Daeron any mercy when the two finally meet, or is the Hightower camp about to learn just how far the Blacks are willing to go?
