The Dandadan: Evil Eye movie premiered in Asia on May 30, 2025, and this weekend, it is airing in cinemas across North America and Europe. The movie has received good scores and is on track to be a financial success, leading to another successful season for the show.

Written by Yukinobu Tatsu, Dandadan was a solid manga hit, but with the launch of the anime, it became a global bestseller. A good example is the fact that in the 2.5 years since its launch, the manga had about 3.2 million copies in circulation in November 2023; after the anime’s release, in about a year, it sold an additional 2 million copies.

The second season is premiering on July 3, 2025 and the new co-director, Abel Góngora, who joins Fūga Yamashiro, recently revealed that the expectations for the second season are very, very high.

After a very, very successful first season, expectations for Dandadan Season 2 are very high. We’ve had the chance to see Evil Eye and we can confirm that the series continues in the same way, so expectations are indeed high.

Abel Góngora, who directed the award-winning opening sequence for the first season, has been elevated to co-director and he recently talked about the expectations for the second season, as well as about his working relationship with Yamashiro, who is returning as director for Season 2 as well.

“Expectations are high and we have to keep up. That’s a concern I have, but I’m lucky. I have [Fuga] Yamashiro, the director of season 1,” Góngora said. “He is there, and he’s helping a lot. We are trying to make a better season, but we’ll see. We are still [working] on it.”

Similar things have been said during the post-credit interview shown as part of Evil Eye, but Góngora talked more about his relationship with Yamashiro.

“We divided the episodes. It’s not exactly half and half, but we are not directing the same episodes We check many things together; we decide many things together. We are also learning a lot from each other – I hope he’s learning too! … We have similar points of view in animation and cinema, so it’s smooth, yeah,” he added.

In the movie interview, Yamashiro also revealed that the two directors had some different approaches to certain scenes and moments, and while they couldn’t allow Góngora to work completely as he wanted to work, they managed to find a proper compromise that the fans will benefit from when Season 2 starts.
