Between hallucinated conversations, flashback sequences, and literal ghosts wandering through Dexter Morgan’s psyche, death has rarely been the final word for anyone connected to this universe.

That pattern continued this week when eagle-eyed fans spotted familiar faces filming together in one of New York City’s busiest tourist spots. It turns out keeping a casting secret is significantly harder when your production decides to shoot in the middle of Times Square.

David Zayas is officially returning to his fan-favorite role of Angel Batista for the second season of ‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ with sources confirming the news to Deadline. Zayas was seen filming alongside series lead Michael C. Hall, embracing warmly on camera while surrounded by extras, locals and tourists trying to snap selfies of the reunion.

The timing is notable given how Batista’s story ended in Season 1. His character was killed off by Leon Prater, played by Peter Dinklage, closing what had been one of the franchise’s longest-running character arcs. Despite the on-set reunion, that death has not been undone, leaving fans to speculate exactly how the show plans to bring him back into the story.

The ‘Dexter’ franchise has a well-established history of resurrecting deceased characters through Dexter’s internal mental landscape, with figures like Harry, Debra and Brian previously appearing as visions guiding his decisions. That styling choice alone fuels speculation that his scenes may exist somewhere outside the show’s regular timeline.

The emotional weight of Batista’s on-screen relationship with Dexter has long been central to the franchise’s appeal. Hall himself has spoken about how meaningful that dynamic is to play, telling The Hollywood Reporter that his confrontation scene with Zayas’ character in Season 1 ranked among his favorite moments to film in the entire series, largely because of the real-life history the two actors share.

Zayas won’t be the only familiar face returning for the new season. Desmond Harrington, who first appeared in Season 1 as Joey Quinn, has been upgraded to a series regular, meaning fans can expect a significantly larger role for the character moving forward.

The season is also bringing back Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa and James Remar, while newcomers Bokeem Woodbine and Nona Parker Johnson join the cast as Capt. Mixon and Fiona Mixon, respectively. It’s a lineup that blends legacy characters with fresh additions, suggesting Season 2 will continue expanding the world introduced in the first season’s New York setting.

‘Dexter: Resurrection’ has quickly reestablished itself as a major player in the franchise’s ongoing revival, following the character’s unlikely survival after the events of ‘Dexter: New Blood.’ With Batista now confirmed to return in some form, the show appears ready to lean even further into its signature blend of crime drama and psychological haunting.
