Dexter Morgan Is Returning to His Roots, and New ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Set Photos Prove It
Few television characters have had a more complicated relationship with their own mortality than Dexter Morgan. Between faking his death, seemingly dying for real, and now navigating an entirely new chapter of his life in New York City, Michael C. Hall’s iconic serial killer has proven remarkably difficult to keep down for good.
That resilience has carried the franchise through multiple revivals, each one finding new ways to complicate Dexter’s carefully maintained double life. With ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ already exploring what happens when a group of serial killers converges on New York City, fans have been eager to see just how far this next chapter will push the character.
Newly surfaced set photos from Thursday’s filming may have just answered one of the franchise’s biggest lingering questions. The images, captured during an exterior shoot in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, show Michael C. Hall filming a scene surrounded by NYPD officers at what appears to be an active crime scene, strongly suggesting Dexter Morgan is returning to work as a forensic technician for the very first time in over a decade.
For the entirety of the original ‘Dexter’ series, which ran from 2006 to 2013, Dexter worked as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, a job that gave him convenient access to crime scenes while he moonlighted as a vigilante killer targeting other murderers. That professional identity was central to the character for eight seasons, making its apparent return in these new photos feel especially significant.
Since then, Dexter has kept that part of himself largely dormant. In ‘Dexter: New Blood,’ he lived under an assumed identity in upstate New York, and through the first season of ‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ he had only briefly flexed his forensic instincts, informally analyzing crime scene photos during a lecture rather than working an official case for law enforcement.
These new set photos suggest Season 2 may finally put Dexter back in a formal forensic role, something the franchise hasn’t fully revisited since the original series ended thirteen years ago. Given that 2026 marks the twentieth anniversary of the franchise’s debut, the timing feels like a deliberate nod to where the character’s story first began.
Michael C. Hall has previously discussed how ‘Resurrection’ managed to bring Dexter back after the character appeared to die at the end of ‘New Blood,’ shot by his own son Harrison. “Well, you know, he didn’t get shot in the head,” Hall told The Guardian, explaining that the idea originated from him casually floating the question of what if Dexter hadn’t actually died.
‘Dexter: Resurrection’ picks up with Dexter now in New York City, surrounded by a returning ensemble that includes Jack Alcott as his son Harrison, along with newer additions like Peter Dinklage and Uma Thurman. David Zayas also returns as Angel Batista, giving longtime fans another direct connective thread back to the original Miami-set series.

Creator Clyde Phillips has described the show’s premise as bringing together a gathering of serial killers in New York, giving Dexter no shortage of new adversaries and complications to navigate. Bringing his forensic skills back into play in an official capacity would add yet another layer to how he balances his dual identities in this new setting.
With filming for Season 2 still actively underway, these Hell’s Kitchen set photos offer one of the clearest signs yet of where the story is headed next. Watching Dexter step back into his most iconic professional role after so many years away gives longtime fans exactly the kind of nostalgic full-circle moment the franchise’s anniversary season seems built to deliver.
