Dbrand has responded to complaints from users who say their Killswitch case for the Switch 2 causes the Joy-Cons to fall off more easily. Some players noticed that when they hold the console by the Joy-Cons, the controllers detach much faster than usual, which doesn’t happen with the Switch 2 alone.

According to Dbrand, the Switch 2 is designed with a small air gap, about half a millimeter, between the Joy-Cons and the console. This gap helps prevent the Joy-Cons from bending or popping off without pressing the release button.

The Killswitch case fills this gap, creating a continuous surface between the Joy-Cons and the main console. This changes how the force works when someone twists or moves the Joy-Cons, making them come off more quickly.

“You’re not ‘weakening’ the connection – you’re just engaging it sooner, because the lip eliminates the buffer that would normally absorb the first few millimeters of movement,” Dbrand explained in a Reddit post. They said the same motion could happen without the case, but it usually takes more effort because of the air gap acting like a cushion.

After many users shared videos and complaints about the Joy-Cons detaching too easily, Dbrand posted a detailed reply on Reddit.

They said this problem only happens when people hold the Switch 2 in a very specific and unusual way, by grabbing only the Joy-Cons without supporting the back of the console, especially if the console is held flat and parallel to the ground.

“Nobody routinely holds their Switch 2 like this,” Dbrand insisted. They compared the situation to the famous Mentos and Diet Coke experiment, where people wouldn’t have tried it if they hadn’t seen others do it online. Dbrand suggested some users might be trying to prove the detachment can happen by holding the device in unnatural ways.

Dbrand also admitted that some of their Killswitch cases might have lips that are about 0.12mm too thick, which could make detachment easier. They said they have adjusted their manufacturing guidelines to catch these slightly thicker cases before they are shipped, with new stock expected in mid-July.

However, the company warned that even with tighter controls, it might still be possible to make the Joy-Cons detach if someone holds the console in the unusual way they described. This is just how a grip with a non-adhesive attachment works.

At the end of their statement, Dbrand said they were “f***** sorry, honestly” if anyone experiences detachment during what they consider normal use, and encouraged those people to contact their support with details about how they use the case.

Reactions to Dbrand’s explanation have been mixed. Some users appreciate the company’s openness, while others feel the response reminds them of the iPhone 4 antenna issue, where Apple told people to avoid holding their phones in certain ways. Some pointed out that people with smaller hands, like kids, often hold the Switch by the Joy-Cons because they can’t reach the back comfortably.

Dbrand is known for its bold and sometimes controversial responses, often positioning itself against the big companies that make the hardware for their accessories. This latest situation is another example of that approach.

What do you think about this? Do you agree with Dbrand’s explanation, or do you think the case really does cause problems for normal users? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
