Switch 2 Crushes Xbox Series and PS5 Pro Sales in Japan After Just Two Weeks

Nintendo’s new console, the Switch 2, is off to a record-breaking start in Japan. According to sales numbers shared by Famitsu, the system has already passed one million units sold in just its second week on the market. That’s faster than any other console in Japan’s history, including the PlayStation 2.
In its first week, the Switch 2 sold 947,931 units in Japan. That was already enough to break the previous launch-week record set by the PS2. Now, with another 153,205 units sold in its second week, the total has reached 1,101,136.
This strong launch has already pushed the Switch 2 ahead of the lifetime sales of Microsoft’s entire Xbox Series lineup in Japan. That includes the Series X, Series S, and Series X Digital Edition. Combined, those consoles sold around 679,000 units in Japan over several years. The Switch 2 beat that in two weeks.
It has also passed the PS5 Pro’s total sales in Japan. Sony’s upgraded console has only sold 221,181 units so far in the country. So even though the Switch 2 is brand new, it’s already outpacing hardware that’s been on shelves for a while.
Here’s where things stand: the original Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite are still being sold, and they each continue to move some units. But all of them were far behind the Switch 2 in sales during the same week. The PlayStation 5 also sold under 10,000 units during that period. Xbox consoles barely made a mark, with some models selling less than 150 units in the week.
Japan has never been a strong market for Xbox, so this result might not be surprising. Still, it’s impressive to see how quickly the Switch 2 has taken off. With the PlayStation 5 sitting at over 5.7 million lifetime sales in Japan, Nintendo still has some ground to cover. But with this kind of early momentum, it might not take long to catch up.
Famitsu provided the data for the latest hardware sales, and based on these early figures, the Switch 2 is shaping up to be another big win for Nintendo.
Honestly, this isn’t just a strong launch, it’s one of the most impressive console starts we’ve ever seen. Nintendo clearly knows how to capture the Japanese market, and the Switch 2 is showing it all over again. What do you think about the Switch 2’s early success? Will it keep this pace going?
