DC and Warner Bros. have shifted the release schedule, again. Although Black Adam is still set to be released next October, we will not watch the next Shazam movie this year, as it was previously announced. DC recently announced that Shazam: Fury of the Gods has been delayed to March 17, 2023, which was the date previously reserved for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is now set to be released on December 25, 2023, Deadline has learned.

DC Extended Universe is still trying to find its way after the idea of Snyderverse and building the shared universe the Marvel way crumbled. The theatrical release of 2017’s Justice League flopped badly at the box office, and despite the director’s cut Zack Snyder’s Justice League, WB has no intention to Restore the Snyderverse, which is something that fans have been asking for ever since ZSJL was released on HBOMax.

Currently, WB is focusing on standalone movies, and they’re hoping for the next year’s The Flash to reshape the DCEU as a shared universe. Before the Shazam! sequel, the Black Adam movie starring Dwayne Johnson is set to be released next October, and the crossover between Levi’s Shazam and Johnson’s Black Adam is set to happen eventually, most likely in the third Shazam movie. With this latest delay, Shazam 2 avoided box-office competition with James Cameron’s Avatar 2, Disney’s movie which is also set to be released on December 16.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was initially set to be released on December 16, 2022, ever since it was first announced in January 2019, which was only a month after the original movie was released. But, since then, a lot of things and unexpected circumstances happened, and the pandemic of COVID-19 was only one of them. Following the first wave of the pandemic, James Cameron’s Avatar, the long-awaited sequel to the original 2009 movie was moved from December 2021 to December 16, 2022. Yep, the same release date as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Last March, Aquaman 2 was delayed to March 2023, and now it’s delayed again as Shazam 2 takes its place on the release calendar.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam: Fury of the Gods will be released on March 17, 2023.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released on December 25, 2023.
