DCU Shake-Up: James Gunn Says One Planned Movie Won’t Happen as Fans Thought
Plans for one of the early DCU projects have changed, and it does not look like it will move forward anytime soon.
James Gunn shared an update about the film based on The Authority while responding to fans online. The project had been announced when Gunn and Peter Safran first took charge of DC Studios, but there has been little progress since then. Now, Gunn has made it clear that things are not going the way many expected.
The Authority is a team of powerful characters who take extreme steps to fix problems in the world. The idea behind the movie was to bring a different kind of superhero group into the new DC Universe. However, according to Gunn, the project is currently not in a place where it can move ahead.
He explained the situation directly, saying, “Just a normal slip of the tongue. I would have never had time to do this and although I know this is a popular theory online I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority. The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.”

This update came after fans asked about the status of the film on social media. There had been rumors and guesses about Gunn being closely involved, but he made it clear that was never the plan.
The project had already been described by Gunn in the past as difficult to develop. After several years without major updates, this new statement suggests the movie has been pushed aside for now.
At the same time, Gunn confirmed that other DCU projects are still moving forward. He said, “[Booster Gold] is in development. [Paradise Lost] is in extreme development.” This shows that while some ideas are slowing down, others are still active behind the scenes.
There is still a chance that The Authority could return in the future, but it is not a priority right now. The focus seems to be on building the DCU step by step before introducing more complex team stories.
Upcoming releases like Supergirl and Clayface are expected to continue shaping the new universe, giving audiences more familiar characters and settings first.
This decision makes sense. The DCU is still being built, and introducing a lesser-known team too early could confuse casual viewers. It may be better to wait until the world is more established. What do you think about this change? Should The Authority movie happen sooner, or is it better to wait? Share your thoughts in the comments.
