Deadpool Takes Over Doctor Doom’s Throne in South Korea as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Hype Spreads

Doctor Doom’s throne has become one of the most recognizable images of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ campaign. The ornate seat first appeared at BilibiliWorld in Shanghai in July, and footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con later revealed Robert Downey Jr.’s villain sitting on a golden throne as green energy pulsed across the ground.

South Korea has been one of the busiest stops for Marvel’s promotion. For Halloween, the Seoul Metropolitan Government held a record 2,000-drone “Marvel Special” light show over the Han River at Ttukseom Hangang Park, featuring Iron Man and other Marvel characters along with a costume parade, event booths, and an ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ photo zone.

Now photos from South Korea show a very unexpected ruler. Images shared by MCU Film News show someone dressed as Deadpool making himself comfortable on a replica of Doctor Doom’s throne.

In the first photo, the Merc with a Mouth lounges sideways across the seat with his legs stretched out, looking completely relaxed. In the second, he sits up holding a silver Doom mask in one hand and a gold pistol in the other, with a katana strapped to his back.

The display features a tall stone-style throne marked with a gold emblem, set against a glowing green stained-glass backdrop. A sign above it, written in Korean, reads “Doomsday” and promotes the film’s big theatrical release in December.

The photos fit the character’s reputation for chaos. Taking over a supervillain’s seat and treating Doom’s iconic mask like a souvenir is exactly the kind of irreverent stunt fans associate with Deadpool.

The images have also renewed questions about whether Deadpool could appear in the film itself. At San Diego Comic-Con, someone who sounded like Ryan Reynolds showed up in Hall H dressed in a gray, denim-style Deadpool costume and joked about wanting a role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

Reynolds isn’t part of the official cast, and Marvel hasn’t confirmed any appearance. The Russo brothers said filming was complete but that they would be open to additional photography, which has kept fan speculation going.

Korean audiences won’t have to wait as long as many other fans. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in South Korean theaters on December 16, 2 days before its US release on December 18.

The Halloween drone show was the final one of the year over the Han River. According to The Korea Times, the 7 shows held through early October drew about 197,000 people, averaging around 28,000 per event.

The Korean throne display is one of many Doom-themed installations around the world. Japan recently unveiled a massive statue of the villain seated on his throne, while a separate Doom statue stood guard in the lobby of 109 Cinemas Osaka Expo City. Marvel has also placed Doom displays in Shanghai, the Philippines, Argentina, and the United States. Few villains have received this kind of global promotion before a release.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men to face Doom. SDCC footage showed Thor attacking the villain with Stormbreaker, only for Doom to stop him and send him flying with green energy.

For now, the Korean photos show that even Doom’s mighty throne can’t escape Deadpool’s mischief. Whether the Merc with a Mouth turns up in the film or not, he has already made an impression on the campaign.

Do you think Deadpool will make a surprise appearance in Avengers: Doomsday?
