‘Demon Slayer’: Who Is Muichirō’s Father & What Happened to Him?

When discussing Demon Slayer, one usually talks about the demon slayers themselves or the demons. And while the series has offered us a variety of other intriguing characters, we will talk about one specific Demon Slayer – Muichirō Tokitō, the Mist Hashira. But, while the story of this article is undoubtedly going to be connected to Muichirō’s story, he won’t be the focus of this article. Namely, as the recent episode of Demon Slayer revealed, Muichirō once had a happy family, and in this, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about his father and his story in the Demon Slayer anime and manga.
Muichirō’s has not been named in the story. He died while the Tokitō twins were children while he was looking for medicine for his wife, their mother, during a storm. He fell from a cliff and died. He seemed to have been a very gentle and wise person, as Muichirō was reminded of him when he talked to Tanjirō. Muichirō seemed to have been very close to his father.
As you can family tragedies are a thing in Demon Slayer, so we have decided to tell you yet another one here. This article is going to focus on Muichirō’s father and how his story is tied to that of his brother, as well as the general plot of Demon Slayer. We have to warn you, though, that this article contains spoilers, so be careful how you approach it if you’re not fully up-to-date with the story of Demon Slayer.
Muichirō’s father remains unnamed, but he seemed to have been an important part of Muichirō’s life
Muichirō and his older twin brother Yūichirō were born into a lumberjack family. When they were ten years of age, their mother became very ill. She eventually developed bronchitis and died in her bed. Before that, their father was very worried about his wife’s condition; therefore, despite the snowstorm, he went to look for medicines and other medical assistance, but on the way to the village, he fell off a cliff and died.
This left the Tokitō twins orphaned, and they were left to care for themselves, as no relatives were present in their lives. As we have said, only the two survived and had no one else but themselves. Muichirō was a kind person, a trait he inherited from his father, while his older twin was rational and tried to assess every situation with a cool head; he was sometimes rude and always stood his ground.
Sadly, aside from the fact that he was a lumberjack and had a wife and twin boys, we don’t know much about Muichirō’s father. He died that night while looking for some plants to make medicine for his sick wife, but that was all the author ever revealed about him.
We saw what he looked like, and interestingly enough, he looked more like Tanjirō Kamado than any of the Tokitō twins, who looked more like their mother. And no, to tell you immediately, there is absolutely no connection between Muichirō’s father and Tanjirō’s family, as Muichirō and Tanjirō are not related, which is something we have already written about here on Fiction Horizon.
Muichirō’s father seemed to have been a very caring and gentle person. This was first implied when Tanjirō’s friendly demeanor and advice triggered a memory in Muichirō, who still suffered from amnesia at the time. He remembered that his father had said a similar thing to him, and a scene (panel) comparing Muichirō’s father and Tanjirō appeared. Still, at the time, it was not enough to fully trigger Muichirō’s memories, so he was still left in the dark for a while. It took almost being killed by Gyokko for him to remember absolutely everything.
Muichirō’s memories of his father seem to be quite pleasant, as the young boy liked to talk to him and was very happy around him as well. His father also seemed to love both twins equally and worked hard to protect them and provide them with a decent life.
When he died, Muichirō’s brother was so sad that he became angry and blamed his father for being weak and overly accommodating, claiming that he himself was to blame for his death. Despite his brother’s words, Muichirō did not want to accept that and kept fond memories of his father.
Sadly, this is all we can say about him. Muichirō’s father seems to be a relatively important character plot-wise, but very little has been revealed about him, and he is a character who will remain more of an anecdote than anything else really. This is a shame since he seems to have been a great guy, and we would have loved more scenes with him.
