A proper ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ recap has to begin with a man who was supposed to be gone. The series picks up weeks after Dexter Morgan was shot in the chest by his own son, and it opens with him waking from a coma. It follows ‘Dexter: New Blood’, which became the most watched series in Showtime history.

Paramount+ released its own refresher on the debut run ahead of the next season, which makes this a good moment to revisit what happened and what it sets up. The story moves from a hospital bed to the streets of New York City, and it ends with Dexter in a very different place than where he started.

How Dexter Survived the Coma and Reunited With Harrison

Dexter awakens from a coma that lasted ten weeks. He finds that Harrison is gone without a trace, and he sets out for New York City to find him and make things right.

Harrison had already left Iron Lake and taken a job as a bellboy at the Empire Hotel. Back in Miami, Detective Angel Batista arrives with questions, and Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him. Batista revoked Dexter’s death certificate before visiting, which legally brought him back to life.

At the end of the first episode, Dexter hears about a gruesome murder in the city and suspects Harrison was involved, so he runs from the hospital. He wants to be there for his son in the way his own father once was for him.

The reunion arrives midseason, and it turns out that Harrison isn’t really into killing despite his father’s attempts at training him. Harry, played by James Remar, warns Dexter not to stray from his true purpose. That tension between fatherhood and the Dark Passenger drives much of the debut season.

Leon Prater and the Finale Vault Showdown

Peter Dinklage plays Leon Prater, and the finale finds Dexter facing him. Prater keeps a collection of murder trophies that includes evidence of Dexter’s past crimes, and he has also learned Dexter’s real identity. That puts both Dexter and Harrison at serious risk.

The plan from Prater and his bodyguard Charley is to leave Dexter in the vault for three days without food and water until he dies. Dexter finds Batista’s phone and calls Harrison to come rescue him. Harrison slips into Prater’s crowded mansion by posing as a waiter.

When Prater takes Harrison hostage, Harrison stabs him with a sedative that Dexter had slipped him episodes earlier. The injection lands in the same spot where Harrison shot his father at the end of ‘Dexter: New Blood’. It is a neat bit of symmetry that gives the son a defining moment.

Dexter then does what he always does, locking Prater in the vault, killing him and cutting him into pieces for disposal. In a dialogue about the finale, The Ringer found the tidy wrap up a little anticlimactic. Variety, by contrast, said the finale capped off the franchise’s return to form.

Charley Brown and the New York Ripper Case

Uma Thurman plays Charley, Prater’s bodyguard, and she is one of the most intriguing additions to the cast. While trapped in the vault, Dexter uncovers files on Prater’s serial killer associates, including one on Charley.

When Harrison tries to rescue his father, Charley confronts him, but a call from Dexter revealing that file convinces her to let Harrison go. She then walks up to Prater and quits. Charley leaves town with her ailing mother.

The finale also reveals Charley’s real name. Her last conversations with Dexter and Prater are loaded with possible teases for more of her in future seasons. That leaves the door open for a return.

The New York Ripper mystery becomes tangible when Dexter discovers a file in Prater’s room devoted to serial killers. After the kill, he also notices a photograph of Prater with NYPD commissioner Franklin McNamara. The detectives on the case do catch a break by the end.

Where Dexter Goes in the Next Season

Dexter takes Prater’s private boat on a detour, and the closing shot suggests he will return to New York City. He ends the season riding off as the captain of his own future, a free man for now.

The information Dexter finds on other serial killers among Prater’s collection sets the stage for more deadly encounters in the second season. Harrison, meanwhile, gets a happy ending for now with Gina, who has not been revealed as nefarious. Variety also noted that the finale mostly cements Harrison as a worthy strategic partner.

Dexter now has a son who can hold his own, a trail of files pointing to other killers and a city that still holds unanswered questions. Do you think Dexter can keep Harrison out of the life that Prater’s files nearly dragged them both into, or will the second season force that father and son bond to be tested all over again?
