Did Disney+ Get ‘Wonder Man’ Viewership Wrong? New Data Raises Doubts Regarding Cancellation

Streaming cancellations rarely come with a full picture of the numbers driving the decision, leaving fans to speculate about whether a show actually failed or simply got caught in a business calculation nobody fully explained. Few recent Marvel decisions have generated quite as much confusion on that front as one particular cancellation from earlier this year.

Wonder Man,’ the Emmy-nominated Disney+ series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley, seemed to be doing everything right after its January debut. Critics loved it, audiences responded warmly, and Disney even announced a Season 2 renewal just two months after the show premiered, an unusual show of confidence for a Marvel Disney+ series.

Then, roughly four months later, that renewal was quietly reversed. Now, new data from Luminate reveals just how strong the show’s actual performance was during that stretch, showing ‘Wonder Man’ generated approximately 2 billion minutes of watch time on Disney+ during the first half of 2026, making it the second-highest-performing Disney+ original season in the U.S. by total watch time, trailing only ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2.

That figure stands in stark contrast to the reasoning that seemingly drove Marvel’s decision. According to Nielsen, the show’s opening week drew 618 million minutes viewed, placing it at number eight among streaming originals before it dropped off the chart entirely the following week and never returned.

That kind of early drop-off, paired with reports that Disney evaluated the cost-effectiveness of continuing the series, appears to have ultimately sealed its fate despite the show’s strong critical reception. Series co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton didn’t hide his frustration with how things played out, telling TheWrap he was “heartbroken” by the news. “I love that show to death,” Cretton said. “If it were up to me, we would be making that show.”

The frustration is understandable given how well ‘Wonder Man’ performed on nearly every other metric besides raw viewership numbers. The series holds a 91 percent critics score and an 87 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Abdul-Mateen received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Simon Williams.

Cretton went further in his comments, suggesting that if Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had final say over the decision, the show would still be moving forward. He also admitted he didn’t fully understand the streaming business calculations behind the reversal, saying he needed to understand “the why” behind a decision that seemingly contradicted the show’s critical success.

According to Variety, a writers’ room for Season 2 was never actually opened before Disney pulled the plug, and the show’s writing staff had already been released to pursue other projects by the time the cancellation became public. A separate report from The Ankler indicated that low viewership specifically was what ultimately convinced Disney the second season wasn’t a worthwhile investment, despite the earlier renewal announcement.

That framing makes the newly revealed Luminate figures particularly striking. A show earning enough watch time to rank second among all Disney+ originals for the first half of the year suggests audiences were engaging with ‘Wonder Man’ considerably more than its early Nielsen numbers implied.

Despite the cancellation, a person with knowledge of the situation indicated that characters from the series could still appear in other Marvel projects down the line, leaving some door open for Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery’s story to continue in some form. For now, though, ‘Wonder Man’ joins a growing list of Marvel Disney+ series that ended after a single season, even as this new data complicates the narrative around exactly why.
