After Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Benedict Cumberbatch reprised the role of Doctor Strange, opened the doors of the Marvel Multiverse, it’s time for Doctor Strange to further explore it next May in his own sequel to the original 2016 movie Doctor Strange.
Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise the role of Master of the Mystic Arts in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will mark his sixth appearance as the famous character that was introduced in MCU back in 2016. Elizabeth Olsen will also reprise the role of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, whose role in the sequel was set up in the WandaVision series earlier this year.
Now, according to Cosmic Circus, Marvel Studios revealed the synopsis of the movie in Japan, and when translated, it goes like this:
“The door of the multiverse, full of mystery and madness, opens! Now that Iron Man and Captain America have left after a fierce battle in Avengers: Endgame, former genius surgeon and the strongest magician of them all, Doctor Strange, is expected to play an active role as a central figure in the Avengers. However, using his magic to manipulate time and space at will with a forbidden spell that is considered the most dangerous has opened the door to a mysterious madness called “the Multiverse.” To restore a world where everything is changing, Strange seeks help from his ally Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme, and the Avengers’ most powerful Scarlet Witch, Wanda. But a terrible threat looms over humanity and the entire universe that no longer can be done by their power alone. Even more surprising, the greatest threat in the universe looks exactly like Doctor Strange… Director Sam Raimi, who has expressed a unique world view, will captivate the whole world with overwhelming scale and unprecedented visual experience that will transcend time and space!” — Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, official synopsis
Okay, the first sentence of the synopsis didn’t reveal anything new, but the rest is pretty interesting. First off, Doctor Strange being called “central figure in the Avengers” sounds really intriguing. Although Marvel never officially said who is the leader of the Avengers in the post-Endgame era, and we’ll probably need to wait for the next big crossover to find that out, many heroes were mentioned as the potential leaders, from Spider-Man to Captain Marvel.
Second, as the teaser trailer previously showed us, Strange will be looking for Wanda’s help, although she thought at first that he came to punish her for everything that happened in the WandaVision series. Some fan theories were saying that Wanda could be one of the movie’s villains, but that either won’t be the case, or Marvel is trying to lead us on the wrong trailer to keep that plot twist a secret. It’s up to you to decide what will you expect.
Benedict Wong will return as Wong, Strange’s best friend, and fellow sorcerer. Wong previously appeared in Doctor Strange, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Some fans called Wong “the new Nick Fury”, which makes Wong something like a supporting, but key figure that will assemble the new generation of Avengers.
Directed by Sam Raimi, who Marvel fans know pretty well as the director of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, replaced Scott Derrickson, who left the project due to creative differences. The movie is also starring Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Xochitl Gomez.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released on May 6, 2022.
