We all know how popular Yellowstone is among the different fans of American drama series in America, and that is the reason why this series was able to become popular enough to get its own spin-offs. In that regard, 1923 is one of the spin-off prequels of Yellowstone as it follows one of the past generations of the Dutton family. One of the Dutton family members that we met was Spencer Dutton, who was seemingly in danger in the pilot episode. So, did Spencer Dutton die in the first episode of 1923?

It is unlikely that Spencer Dutton died in the first episode of 1923. That’s because he is set to be one of the most important characters of the series. There is also the fact that 1923’s IMDB page states that Brandon Sklenar, the actor playing Spencer, is set to appear in all eight episodes of 1923.

While it might be true that Spencer was seemingly killed in the first episode, let’s not forget that the Yellowstone universe created by Taylor Sheridan has allowed us to see other characters surviving similar fates that should have killed them. In that regard, Spencer is likely to survive what happened to him in the first episode and is set to have an important role in the series.

What Happened To Spencer Dutton?

Ever since Yellowstone was released, Taylor Sheridan has been cashing in on the success of his creation, as this series ranks as one of the most popular shows in America. Of course, it is the fact that this is such a dramatic series that is as American as it can get in terms of its storyline and premise is the reason why this is quite popular among different people in the United States. And it is the fact that Yellowstone is popular that it was able to get two prequel series in the form of 1883 and 1923.

Of course, 1923 is the sequel to 1883 and follows the story of a new generation of the Dutton family. In this series, we were able to meet new characters that are set to face their own challenges in the middle of one of the toughest eras in America. Of course, that’s because the 1920s and 30s were not entirely good for the American people due to a massive drought and the Great Depression. On top of that, a lot of Americans were still affected by the events of World War I.

One such character that has an intriguing story in 1923 is Spencer Dutton. He is the nephew of Jacob Dutton, and the younger brother of John Dutton Sr., who we all know is the father of Yellowstone’s John Dutton. While John Dutton Sr. actively works on the Dutton ranch as Jacob’s right-hand man, Spencer spent a few years of his youth fighting for the country during the first Great War. That means that he experienced a lot of traumatizing events in World War I and is seemingly scarred by what he witnessed back then.

There is a reason to believe that Spencer Duttons’ experiences in World War I have left him traumatized. It is even possible that the traumas of losing people to the First Great War could affect his character during the events of 1923, as such traumas may manifest during the course of the series.

It is also worth noting that Spencer spent time going on expeditions in Africa, where he hunted animals for sport. This was the reason why he got into some trouble during the events of the pilot episode of 1923, as he was attacked and seemingly killed by a jaguar.

Does Spencer Dutton Die In The First Episode?

As mentioned, Spencer Dutton was on the wrong end of a jaguar attack during the pilot episode of 1923, as it is heavily implied that he was killed right then and there. However, it is unlikely that Spencer died in the first episode of the series. Of course, the first clue that we have is the fact that Brandon Sklenar, the actor who plays Spencer in 1923, is going to appear in all eight episodes of the series, according to 1923’s IMDB page. That means that he is likely to survive that attack and will appear in the next seven episodes of the series.

The trailer of 1923 also shows that Spencer still has a lot of scenes that are yet to be shown in the series. That means that he is indeed likely to return from that ordeal with the jaguar alive. Nevertheless, we do believe that this brush with death in that jaguar attack will have a heavy effect on him and the entire Dutton family.

We have always known that the Duttons are no strangers to violence and death, as Yellowstone has allowed us to see how violence has always been a part of this family. Of course, we saw early on in the events of Yellowstone that Lee Dutton died in a manner that surprised a lot of fans. And, of course, in 1883, Elsa Dutton died as well.

While it is unlikely that Spencer died in that jaguar attack, the fact is that this scene is a reminder to fans that death can always come at the most unexpected of times for the Dutton family. It might also serve as an ill omen on the part of Spencer and the Duttons that violence and death are just right around the corner, especially when you consider the fact that the 1920s and 30s weren’t exactly the easiest decades for Americans.

Due to the overall premise of 1923, the series is set to have the darkest tone out of all of the different shows that take place in Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe. It is even possible that this violent attack on Spencer is only one of the many violent events that will happen to the Dutton family during the events of the series. And that is why it serves as the ill omen that will eventually haunt the entire family as the events of 1923 unfold.
