Emily Hampshire Blames Tony Stark for E.D.I.T.H.’s Chaos in ‘VisionQuest’
Marvel’s ‘VisionQuest’ has finally arrived on Disney+, and it’s taking viewers somewhere the MCU hasn’t really gone before: inside Vision’s mind. The 8-episode series, the final chapter of the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’, premiered on October 14 with 2 episodes.
Inside Vision’s mind, Tony Stark’s old AI creations take on human form. J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H. and even Ultron live in a virtual mansion, helping Vision explore different sides of humanity. One of them is clearly having more fun than the others.
‘Schitt’s Creek’ star Emily Hampshire, who plays E.D.I.T.H., has explained why her version of the AI is so chaotic. Speaking at New York Comic Con, she traced the character’s unpredictable personality to her origins in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’.
Her reasoning was simple. As Hampshire put it, E.D.I.T.H. is essentially Tony Stark’s ego bottled up in a pair of sunglasses, given access to dangerous weapons and handed to a teenager. After an experience like that, she asked, who would E.D.I.T.H. be once she came out of those glasses?
Emily Hampshire says the chaotic EDITH AI seen in ‘VISIONQUEST’ is the result of her experience through ‘SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME’. “If Tony Stark bottled his ego and put it into a pair of sunglasses, gave it access to all these dangerous weapons and gave her to a teenager, who would she be after being in those glasses?”

In ‘Far From Home’, E.D.I.T.H. was only a voice, performed by Dawn Michelle King. Stark created the AI to run an augmented reality security and defense system, giving its user access to Stark Industries’ satellites, drones, and weapons, and left it to Peter Parker.
‘VisionQuest’ gives her a body and a strong personality. Styled as a 1920s aviator with goggles, a scarf and a flight jacket, E.D.I.T.H. handles fun, leisure and weaponry in Vision’s mindscape. Hampshire has described her as a mix of cheerleader, AI, and malfunctioning theme park ride.
Hampshire has talked a lot about the character’s appetite for chaos. “She’s just dying to have fun, yet her idea of fun is blowing things up!” she told Supanova. She also spoke about the deeper side of the role. “Much of her desire is to be in on being alive,” Hampshire explained, adding that the AI family trying to understand humanity faces a shared problem: “None of us knows what that’s like!”
The role came out of a creative partnership. Showrunner Terry Matalas wrote E.D.I.T.H. with Hampshire’s voice in mind after the 2 worked together on ’12 Monkeys’. Matalas even based the AI on Hampshire’s ’12 Monkeys’ character, Jennifer Goines.

That history helped Hampshire feel at home in a franchise that was new to her. “In a way, it felt like I was going home,” she said of joining the MCU, even though she reportedly had to look up what the MCU was when she was first cast.
Hampshire is part of a strong ensemble of Stark AIs. Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y., James D’Arcy plays J.A.R.V.I.S. as a human avatar inspired by Edwin Jarvis, and James Spader returns as Ultron. Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer play Stark’s workshop robots, D.U.M.-E. and U.
Paul Bettany leads the series as Vision, who has his memories back but no emotional connection to them. When a bounty is placed on him, he goes on the run with a mysterious teenager, played by Ruaridh Mollica, who may be his reincarnated son, Tommy.
Hampshire’s explanation gives fans a fun way to think about how ‘VisionQuest’ reimagines familiar parts of the MCU. Instead of treating E.D.I.T.H. as just a piece of tech, the show treats her as a character shaped by everything she’s been through, including the ego of the man who built her.
It’s a clever approach, and it suits Hampshire, whose comedic timing made her a fan favorite as Stevie Budd. With 6 episodes still to come, viewers will get to see how much trouble E.D.I.T.H. can cause inside Vision’s head.
