Eric Stonestreet Goes Dark as a Serial Killer in ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

Eric Stonestreet, the lovable goofball we know from ‘Modern Family,’ is jumping into a role that’s about as far from comedy as you can get. He’s set to creep us out in the new Showtime series ‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ and I’m already hooked on the idea.

Stonestreet’s playing a serial killer named Al, a Midwestern guy with a chilling secret. It’s a wild leap from his days as Cameron Tucker, the over-the-top dad on ‘Modern Family.’ That show ran from 2009 to 2020, racking up 11 seasons and earning him two Emmys for his spot-on humor. Now, he’s ditching the laughs to join the twisted world of Dexter Morgan.

If you’re new to this, ‘Dexter’ first hit screens in 2006, following a forensics guy who moonlights as a vigilante killer. Michael C. Hall made the character a legend over eight seasons, even if the ending in 2013 left us scratching our heads. Then ‘Dexter: New Blood’ came along in 2021, shaking things up with a snowy setting and a finale that teased Dexter’s death—only to flip it for ‘Resurrection.’ Hall’s back, filming in New York right now, and the show’s aiming for a summer drop on Paramount+ with Showtime.

What’s got me excited is Stonestreet’s part. He’s in for four episodes, and a comedy star turning into a murderer feels like a total curveball. The cast is loaded too—Uma Thurman’s a no-nonsense security chief, Peter Dinklage plays a rich guy with secrets, and Krysten Ritter and Neil Patrick Harris are rumored to be killers as well. It’s a lineup that promises some serious thrills.

Stonestreet’s done drama before, like a small role in ‘Confirmation’ back in 2016, and he popped up in ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’ as a quirky clerk. Still, this feels bigger—more intense. The guy who had us cracking up for years is now set to send shivers down our spines.

‘Dexter: Resurrection’ isn’t the only thing cooking in this universe. We just had ‘Dexter: Original Sin,’ a prequel about Dexter’s early days, wrap its first season last month with over 2.6 million viewers tuning in. Clyde Phillips, who ran the original show’s best years, is steering this ship too. With him and Hall in charge, I’ve got high hopes.

Picture this—Stonestreet, the king of sitcom charm, staring us down as a cold-eyed killer. It’s a stretch, but that’s what makes it so fun to think about. This summer, we’ll see how it all plays out, and I’ll be watching every second. You in?
