Everything to Remember Before ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Returns for Its Longest Season Yet
‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ is heading back into the world with its biggest batch of episodes in years, and the timing carries some real weight for a show that has spent nearly two decades chronicling the misadventures of Paddy’s Pub. Season 18 premieres August 17 at 9 p.m. ET across FXX and FX, with the show also streaming on Disney+ internationally.
For longtime viewers, this new season is less a reboot than a continuation of a run that has already rewritten television history. The series became the longest-running live-action scripted comedy in American television history back in its fifteenth season, surpassing ‘The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.’ Season 18 pushes that legacy further, and there is plenty for fans to catch up on before the Gang returns to Philly.
A Longer Season and a New Release Schedule
The most immediate change this year is the episode count. Unlike the previous three seasons, Season 18 will consist of 10 episodes rather than eight. The first two episodes will premiere together on August 17, with one new episode airing weekly through October 12.
That expanded run breaks a pattern that had held since Season 15. Seasons 15, 16, and 17 each consisted of eight episodes. Bumping the order back up to double digits gives the writers more room to build out storylines across the season rather than resolving everything in a tighter, truncated run.
Streaming access remains largely the same as in past years. All previous seasons, one through 17, are available to stream on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers. International viewers will be able to follow along as new episodes drop, since the season is also distributed through Disney+ outside the United States.
Production on the season wrapped well ahead of the premiere. Filming was reported to be underway as of mid-February 2026, and the season officially wrapped production by mid-April 2026, giving the show a fairly standard runway between production and broadcast.
Where the Gang Left Off and What Season 18 Will Cover
Season 17 closed on a notably sentimental note for Frank Reynolds. The prior season ended with Frank, played by Danny DeVito, making plans to marry his Golden Bachelor love interest and poultry heiress Samantha, played by DeVito’s former ‘Taxi’ co-star Carol Kane. That plotline appears to carry directly into the new season.
The broader shape of Season 18 leans into current events filtered through the Gang’s usual self-interest. The season finds Charlie, Mac, Dennis, Dee, and Frank wrapped up in salvaging inheritances from a dead woman, surviving tent encampments and the divide between the haves and have-nots, and withstanding job loss tied to workplace automation. Other threads include a newfound appreciation for neurodivergence, conspiracy theories, and the public’s shifting relationship with drinking.
There is also a return to some old rivalries. The Gang finds itself battling nerds, LARPers, and the McPoyle family at a Renaissance Faire, and separately tries to sportswash its way back into the community’s good graces by sponsoring a Little League team. The McPoyles are confirmed to be part of that Renaissance Faire storyline, bringing the notorious family back into the Gang’s orbit.
Behind the scenes, the writing process took the show to an unusual setting. Season 18’s writers’ room was located in the Lagoon Building of CBS Radford, the original site where ‘Gilligan’s Island’ was filmed, a detail the show itself has leaned into as a bit of art imitating life.
Cast and Cameos Fans Can Expect
The five core cast members are all confirmed to return. Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, series creator Rob Mac, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito are all back playing Charlie, Dennis, Mac, Dee, and Frank as they run the perpetually failing Paddy’s Pub.
Beyond the main five, FX has been deliberately vague about who else will show up. The network has not announced a complete list of guest stars for the season, though its official description promises cameos and references to Philadelphia traditions and other television comedies. FXX has separately teased that the season will include loads of star cameos, without confirming names ahead of the trailer’s release.
The show has a long track record of high-profile guest turns to draw on for comparison. Recent seasons have included a memorable appearance from Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, who stopped by to promote their real-life mezcal brand, and the series has repeatedly used star cameos as a way to poke fun at itself and the entertainment industry more broadly.
Executive producers remain largely consistent with recent seasons as well. The season is executive produced by creator Mac, along with Day, Howerton, Michael Rotenberg, Nicholas Frenkel, David Hornsby, Rob Rosell, Scott Marder, Dave Chernin, John Chernin, and Vanessa McGee, with FX Productions producing.
Frank and Samantha’s Wedding Takes Center Stage
The trailer for Season 18 puts real focus on whether Frank and Samantha will actually make it down the aisle. The footage shows Samantha appearing healthy early on before taking a dramatic turn reminiscent of ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ before she can finish saying her vows. It is a fittingly absurd complication for a couple whose entire courtship has been built on chaos.
Dee also gets pulled into the wedding storyline in a way that seems designed to test Samantha’s resolve. The trailer shows Dee giving Samantha a crash course on everything that marriage to Frank actually entails, which suggests the wedding arc will double as a vehicle for some of the show’s sharper character comedy.
The trailer also reinforces the tone FX is promising for the season as a whole. The network’s marketing describes the Gang, now in their 50s and 80s, as more out of control than ever, closing with the line that anyone who thinks age brings wisdom is, in the show’s words, a jabroni. It is a promise of business as usual for a group of characters who have never once shown growth, and that consistency is very much the point.
With the Renaissance Faire chaos, Frank’s wedding hanging in the balance, and a longer episode order to work with, Season 18 has a lot riding on it heading into its premiere. Which storyline are you most curious to see play out once Frank and Samantha actually reach the altar.
