Ewan McGregor on Playing Obi-Wan Again: “I’m Pretty Sure, You Know”
Star Wars has several projects in the works right now. There’s Mangold’s new Star Wars movie set way back in the past, and Waititi’s secret project, which he hinted might upset some fans. Also, there’s a movie in the works about Rey rebuilding the Jedi order 15 years into the future.
Rumor has it that it won’t kick off a whole new trilogy but will be a standalone film. Plus, Filoni is busy with ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 and other stuff. Among all these, fans kept asking about ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2. Ewan McGregor talked a bit about what could happen next in his LADBible interview.
The truth is I’ve talked about having to cover for doing the Obi-Wan season for years, I had to lie about that and I’m not lying about this now. I don’t know. There’s been no phone call to me from Lucasfilm, or Disney saying, ‘Let’s do another one’. Obi-Wan was made as a limited series and it’s out and people like it, which I’m very, very pleased about. I love doing it. I hope we get a chance to do another one and I’m sure we will. I’m pretty sure, you know, I’ve got a few years yet before I’m the same age as Alec Guinness was in A New Hope. So there’s time to tell more stories in there.
Less than a year ago, Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, mentioned that the chances of a second season of the show are slim. This is because a lot of new content had been announced during the Star Wars Celebration event just a few months earlier.
That is not in active development. But I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another.
Chow, the show’s director, had even more disappointing news for the fans. Her statement didn’t suggest a positive future for the show.
Now, the possibilities for Season 2 are wide open – if it ever comes to fruition. There’s about a decade of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s self-imposed exile on Tatooine between the end of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 1 and ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.’ Wouldn’t it be fascinating to explore those years of Kenobi’s solitude?
Having Anakin and Obi-Wan reunite would contradict the original trilogy, but Season 2 could focus on Kenobi’s life on Tatooine. Perhaps he faces threats specific to the planet. Maybe we witness him silently safeguarding young Luke from afar? What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments below!
