Season 4 of ‘The Boys’ started off with a bang, despite somewhat poorer reviews than the rest of the seasons, it’s still a decent show that attracted loads of new and returning fans.

One scene in particular caused confusion in long-time fans of the show – the loaded scene in which Frenchie can be seen making out with a character newly introduced to the show – played by Elliot King.

As you would expect, plenty of angry fans took to social media to discuss their disappointment, claiming that the writers have now gay-washed Tomer Capone’s character, those fans likely haven’t been paying attention to Frenchie’s back story in the first place.

Frenchie wasn’t made gay in Season 4, he was always at least bisexual. Plenty of fans expected him to hook up and eventually develop some kind of romantic relationship with Kimiko, but quite frankly their strange relationship never led anywhere. Frenchie is the only person who can understand and temper Kimiko’s behavior, but some scenes from his past heavily imply that he was always “playing for the other team.”

In a series of heartbreaking flashbacks that fans saw in Season 2 of the show, Frenchie’s sexual orientation gets a bit clearer. In those flashbacks, it was hinted that Frenchie is in a polyamorous relationship with Cherie and Jay. In this scene, Cherie even directly states that Frenchie is “a little gay.”

Frenchie’s sexuality is further highlighted when he refers to Jay as “my Dorothy” before kissing his hand, likening their trio with Cherie to the main characters from The Golden Girls. Another moment shows him kissing Jack Quaid’s character, Hughie, on the lips.

When Jay dies of a drug overdose, Frenchie’s highly emotional reaction subtly suggests that his love for Jay is more than platonic.

If you’re wondering whether Frenchie is gay in the comics, or at least bisexual. He wasn’t. He was straight. In fact his past relationship with his “sweetheart” Marie played a huge role in shaping him as a character, as his girlfriend left him while he was away in war to hook up with his most bitter enemy. It’s also implied over the course of the story that he has a more special relationship with “The Female of the Species,” but it also leads nowhere. His bisexuality and past polyamorous relationship are definitely new to the show.
