Fans Speculate Lady Gaga Could Win an Oscar for Her Role in ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ After Casting Director’s Remarks

Initially intended as a standalone film, ‘Joker’ (2019) was originally not envisioned to have sequels. However, Warner Bros. aimed to use it to launch DC Black, a series of darker, more experimental films distinct from the DC Extended Universe. Despite this, director Todd Phillips expressed interest in continuing the story with a sequel.

By November 2019, the sequel was officially confirmed to be in development. Following the announcement, it was disclosed that Lady Gaga would join Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as Harley Quinn. Phillips justified casting Gaga by citing his familiarity with her exceptional performance in ‘A Star is Born,’ which he had produced, describing it as nothing short of magical.

Lady Gaga recently remarked that she intends to bring a unique and authentic interpretation to the role of Harley Quinn, sparking varied reactions among fans. Some eagerly anticipate her performance, while others argue that her casting might overshadow Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Joker.

This concern was echoed by casting director Francine Maisler in a recent interview with Deadline, discussing Gaga’s approach to the role.

Man, she’s good. Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real — and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is — shows she’s good

After these remarks, fans are convinced that Gaga is poised to win an Oscar.

There are fans once again who hold a different opinion on that idea:

‘Folie à Deux’ is characterized as a musical drama unfolding in and around Arkham Asylum, though exact plot details have yet to be officially confirmed. The ensemble cast features Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson. The screenplay was collaboratively penned by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver. Scheduled for release by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 4, 2024, “Joker: Folie à Deux” awaits its debut.
