Fans Voted 10 Worst Superhero Movies Ever & Here Are the Results

When it comes to superhero movies, we often see lists ranking the best ones ever made. Superhero films only started being seen as good in the last decade, thanks to better CGI and effects that made superheroes look less cheesy on screen.
But before ‘Endgame’ and ‘Dark Knight,’ there were plenty of bad superhero adaptations. Some are so bad they’re still laughed at today. Fans on Ranker gathered and cast over 500K votes to decide: What’s the worst superhero movie ever?
10. ‘The Fantastic Four’ (1994)
Just by looking at the costumes and Thing’s latex suit in ‘The Fantastic Four’ (1994), you can tell what direction it’s headed. The film was so poor that it never saw an official release, though copies can still be found with some effort. Surprisingly, despite its objective flaws, it’s not terrible enough to be shelved forever. Certain aspects, like its script and Michael Bailey Smith’s portrayal of Ben Grimm, have even received praise.
9. ‘Supergirl’ (1984)
The ranking of this movie isn’t surprising if you’re not a fan of campy superhero films, which is exactly what it offered. Starring Helen Slater as Supergirl and Faye Dunaway as Selena, critics disliked the inconsistent portrayal of the characters. However, the film did feature some impressive practical effects and scenes, especially considering the year it was released.
8. ‘Daredevil’ (2003)
Another not-so-surprising entry on the list is a film that, in my opinion, has aged poorly. While it was criticized upon release, the reviews were more “mixed” than terrible. However, when Netflix released its ‘Daredevil’ series, fans started to dislike the movie even more, despite Ben Affleck delivering a decent performance in the film.
7. ‘Barb Wire’ (1996)
In case you forgot, Pamela Anderson starred in her own superhero movie as Barbara “Barb Wire” Kopetski. You won’t ever find this movie on any “top 10 best” list. ‘Barb Wire’ was criticized for having a plot similar to ‘Casablanca’ and its low-brow attempts at sensuality.
6. ‘Superman IV: The Quest For Peace’ (1987)
Believe it or not, one of Christopher Reeve’s Superman movies managed to be worse than a Pamela Anderson-led superhero film. Sadly, it’s true. ‘The Quest for Peace’ was dull, with poor action and extremely cheap special effects. Some critics even noted that the series couldn’t sink any lower from there.
5. ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ (2011)
I don’t necessarily agree that ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ is worse than ‘The Quest for Peace,’ but it’s definitely a bad movie. The sequel to the first Ghost Rider film suffered from cheap CGI, poor dialogue, and by this point, no one found Cage’s over-the-top performance even mildly interesting.
4. ‘Elektra’ (2005)
This movie is notable in superhero history for several reasons. First, it allegedly ruined Jennifer Garner’s career, and second, it killed the idea of female-led superhero movies for quite some time. It flopped largely due to its tone-deaf and unintelligent script. Despite this, Jennifer Garner was good in the role, and the film’s failure wasn’t her fault.
3. ‘Green Lantern’ (2011)
The CGI suit. ‘Green Lantern,’ released in 2011, aimed to tell an ambitious—perhaps too ambitious—story within its short runtime, and that was its biggest problem. I don’t agree that it’s the third-worst movie on this list, but fans have spoken. It has been mocked and memed relentlessly since its release, with Ryan Reynolds often poking fun at it in other projects.
2. ‘Catwoman’ (2004)
There’s not much to say about this movie except that Halle Berry’s performance was the only somewhat decent aspect, and even that wasn’t great. Berry won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress that year, and the movie itself racked up at least eight “worst” awards.
1. ‘Batman & Robin’ (1997)
This movie earned Clooney the reputation of being one of the worst Batman actors ever. ‘Batman & Robin’ was heavily criticized by both critics and audiences. It was labeled the least distinctive in the Batman series, with professionals panning its chaotic mix of action, camp, and spectacle, attributing its dullness to excessive studio interference. The best way to describe this Batman installment is “exhausting.” While I don’t think it’s the worst superhero movie of all time, it deserves a high spot on the list simply because it’s a Batman movie and should be held to higher standards.
