‘FBI’ Season 9 Episode 2 Recap and Ending Explained: Jubal Closes In on Isobel’s Secret With OA

Monday night’s ‘FBI’ stepped away from OA’s undercover storyline for most of its runtime and put the focus on a murder case that grew more tangled with every suspect. The episode, titled “Omissions,” followed the killing of Clint Mathias, an agent working undercover on a DHS task force that was investigating a white nationalist organization. It closed with a cliffhanger that brings another agent dangerously close to a secret the team has guarded carefully.

This ‘FBI’ episode recap and ending explained breakdown covers who killed Clint, how a child’s teddy bear cracked the case, and why the final scene matters for the weeks ahead. The season premiere had already delivered bad news for OA, since his temporary assignment was not over and he would keep working with Anna, played by Claire Coffee. Spoilers follow for everything that aired.

Episode Recap of a Murder Outside a School

Clint was close to finishing his undercover work, so he took a risk and met his young daughter Ariel, who lived with her grandmother. He gave her a teddy bear, received a bracelet in return, and was shot dead near her school soon after.

Because Clint was a deputized federal agent, his death became a federal crime, and the team first looked at Burns, the man Clint had been investigating. Burns was later arrested on gun charges and had an alibi, but he had photographed Clint arguing with Hugo Reyna, Clint’s former partner in the gang unit.

Clint’s commanding officer, Lt. Marcus Warren, could not explain the fight, until the team learned that Clint had transferred to the task force to get away from Reyna. Warren was not ready to believe his team had a dirty cop, which made questioning Reyna difficult until Jubal stepped in.

The dispute traced back to a traffic stop of suspected heroin supplier Cobi Harkes, where Clint searched the car and found nothing while Reyna later found two kilos. Reyna had a solid poker game alibi, which pushed the team toward Cobi as another possible suspect.

Ending Explained as the Teddy Bear Reveals the Truth

The proof the team needed came from the gift Clint gave his daughter. He had hidden a microSD card inside the teddy bear before his death, and it held pictures of Fernando Balboa buying a burner phone. Balboa belonged to the Latin Kings, rivals of Cobi’s gang, so it was clear he had sent the anonymous tip that led to Cobi’s arrest.

The team cleared Cobi after learning that Clint was about to testify on his behalf. Reyna was found trying to kill Balboa, and once he was stopped he admitted that his fight with Clint was about Clint believing he was dirty. The murder weapon was then found at Balboa’s house.

The final twist reframed the whole case. Clint’s murder was orchestrated by Balboa’s lawyer, Tobias Harkes, who happens to be Cobi’s brother. Tobias offered peace to the Latin Kings while trying to eliminate his brother for good, and Clint’s testimony threatened that plan.

Tobias confessed once he realized his brother was going to walk, since federal custody was safer than the risk of retaliation on the street. The case works as a tidy illustration of the episode’s title, because every person involved was hiding something, and the truth only surfaced through the one object a father left behind for his child.

Cliffhanger and OA’s Undercover Mission

The case itself did not touch OA’s operation, but the episode still made room for it. OA reached out to Isobel because he wanted a special device for an investigation, and she promised to arrange it. Jubal then noticed Ian Lim handing the device to Isobel in plain sight, which raised his suspicion.

In the final moments, Jubal followed Isobel to her secretive meeting with OA and demanded answers. Until that point, Maggie and Isobel were the only agents in on the undercover mission. Jubal’s instincts as a veteran agent made the scene feel earned rather than convenient.

The official synopsis also noted that Maggie bonds with her new partner and is pulled in to secretly help OA. With Jubal now standing in the room, a secret held by two agents is close to becoming a three person problem, and the pressure on everyone involved rises with it.

Recap Takeaways for the Season Ahead

The cliffhanger makes more sense when set against how OA’s story began. The previous season ended with OA being fired from the team, and Anna approached him at a bar to offer a place on her strike team. That exit was never meant to be permanent, and the show has been quietly building a web of people who must now know the truth.

Speaking to TV Insider, showrunner Mike Weiss said it would be interesting to see “a little bit of the fallout of this secret ripple” early in the season. He also said deep undercover work takes a serious emotional toll, something the writers want to explore. Jubal’s confrontation looks like the first real example of that fallout arriving.

Viewers who missed the broadcast can stream the episode on Paramount+. Now that Jubal has followed Isobel to that meeting, do you think he becomes OA’s strongest ally on the inside, or does his need for answers put the entire undercover mission at risk?
