A few days ago, it was announced that Sony Picture Animation will release a short film called ‘The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story’ on YouTube.

The short is part of the ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ universe and focuses on Miles Morales. It follows Miles as he navigates the challenges of being a teenager, friend, student, and superhero. Amidst these pressures, he begins experiencing panic attacks and confronts manifestations of his anxiety. Through this journey, Miles learns the importance of seeking help, understanding that asking for assistance is as brave as fighting villains to safeguard his city.

The studio unveiled the first teaser for the short film a day before its premiere.

The digital release is a collaboration with the Kevin Love Fund and will be part of the fund’s mental health-focused lesson plan called ‘The Hero Within.’ This curriculum encourages students to delve into mental health awareness by sharing their own stories through interactive activities, like a creative storyboard exercise.

Jarelle Dampier, the short’s director, provided a statement about its significance to those grappling with mental health and their aspirations:

Miles represents so many of us doing the best we can in our day-to-day lives. We don’t often realize all that we’ve been through until our own body forces us to become aware of its experience. My intention is that ‘The Spider Within’ can motivate deeper conversations amongst friends & family about their own mental health journeys — and I hope it feels like a love letter to those who adore Miles Morales.

‘The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story’ will premiere on YouTube on March 27 at 6 a.m. PT.
