‘For All Mankind’ Season 5 Finale Preview Reveals Mars Is Tearing Itself Apart at the Worst Possible Moment

Apple TV’s alternate-history space drama has never been a show that lets its characters breathe for long. Since its debut in 2019, ‘For All Mankind’ has built its reputation on pulling the rug out from under its audience at precisely the moment things seem to be stabilizing, and Season 5 has been no exception to that bruising tradition.

The fifth season is set in the 2010s and picks up in the years since the Goldilocks asteroid heist, with Happy Valley on Mars having grown into a thriving colony supporting thousands of residents. But that expansion has come at a cost. Governments back on Earth have been pushing for greater control over how the Mars base operates, and an unexpected death early in the season ignites a fierce debate about the future of Martian law and order. That friction has been simmering across ten episodes, and now, with the finale one day away, the pressure has become impossible to contain.

Collider has shared an exclusive sneak peek at the Season 5 finale, titled “This Land Is Our Land.” The ominous episode title references the 1940 Woody Guthrie protest song, and in the clip, the resilience of Mars is pushed to its limits as Svetlana Efremova’s Irina Morozova pleads patience with Coral Peña’s Aleida Rosales. The tension radiating from that single exchange makes clear that the show is entering its endgame with absolutely nothing held back.

Episode 9 left the situation on a knife’s edge, with Mars erupting into open warfare and the Sojourner crew on Titan losing contact with the planet entirely, presumably because marines interfered with communications at Happy Valley. With only one episode remaining, the only hope appears to be that Kelly’s discovery of possible life on Titan and footage of military brutality from the surface might somehow contribute to ending the conflict. The pieces are in place for a finale that could reshape the entire universe of the show.

Co-showrunners Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert teased what to expect in a conversation with Collider, with Wolpert saying the Season 5 finale will give viewers “something for you” whether they want to scream or sit in stunned silence, promising both thrills and deep emotion in equal measure. That is a bold promise for a season that has already delivered some of the most harrowing sequences in the show’s run.

Apple has made the stakes of this moment even more deliberate by scheduling the premiere of the spinoff series ‘Star City’ for the exact same day as the Season 5 finale, a calculated move to keep subscribers engaged without a gap between the two shows. ‘Star City’ is an eight-episode Cold War thriller set behind the Iron Curtain, following Soviet cosmonauts, engineers, and KGB officers inside the Soviet space program, with Rhys Ifans leading the cast.

Season 6 has been confirmed as the final outing for ‘For All Mankind,’ with Nedivi and Wolpert releasing a joint statement saying that getting to explore the universe of the show over six seasons has been an amazing privilege and that they are thrilled to finish the story the way they always hoped. With the end of this beloved series now officially on the horizon, Friday’s finale feels like one of the most consequential hours the show has ever produced.

Whether Aleida can hold things together long enough for the Titan crew to make it home is anyone’s guess, so share your predictions for how ‘For All Mankind’ closes out Season 5 in the comments.
