As far as The Seven Deadly Sins manga and anime are concerned, it is a well-known fact that the whole series was very popular around the world, despite the fact that a lot of people criticized it for being one of the (best or worst, you pick the word) examples of fan-service in the world of anime. Still, the series was so popular that it spanned a sequel, Four Knights of the Apocalypse, and this article will focus on events from the sequel. Namely, the sequel introduced many new characters, and one of them, Percival, has so many similarities with Meliodas that many fans think they are related. They are not, but in this article, we are actually going to explain how the two of them are connected in the series.
Meliodas and Pecival are not related
Due to there being many similarities between the two of them, many fans think that Meliodas and Percival are actually related, but we can confirm that they are not. They are, as we have said, connected, but they are not related by blood; Meliodas and Elizabeth do have a son, Tristan, who is an ally of Percival, but that’s about it. Meliodas did offer to raise Percival at one point, but more on that later. Let us first see Percival’s story.
Percival was born 16 years ago during the final years of the Holy War. Not much is known about his past, but it was later revealed by Ironside that he found Percival inside a wagon that fell off a cliff. He took the child and planned on using a forbidden spell on him as a vessel of a powerful Life Spirit, all in order to transfer the soul of his own son into a new, immortal body. This was a very devious plan, and it was ultimately foiled by Varghese, Ironside’s father.
Namely, as Varghese realized that Arthur, due to the influence of Chaos, became a tyrannical ruler, he decided to betray him and flee away from Camelot. While running, he took Percival with him, and they both fled to Liones, where Meliodas greeted and accepted them, praising their courage, as he was also aware that Arthur had become a villain. There, Meliodas offered to raise Percival instead of Varghese, but the latter declined and raised the boy himself while enjoying the protection of the Kingdom of Liones.
Percival’s role in the Four Knights of the Apocalypse is basically the same as Meliodas’ in The Seven Deadly Sins
Now that we’ve cleared up the first part let us see how Meliodas and Percival are actually connected. Well, the first and most obvious connection is that Percival is an “officer” of the Kingdom of Liones, i.e., that he is a Holy Knight of Liones, which is a title bestowed upon him by Meliodas himself. In that aspect, Perival’s loyalties lie with Meliodas and Liones, against the villainous Arthur and Camelot. This is the first and most obvious connection between them.
This one is also related to the second one, and that is Tristan Liones, the son of Meliodas and Elizabeth. Tristan is also a Holy Knight of Liones, but like Percival, he is also one of the Four Knights of the Apocalypse, which is how the two became so close. So yes, Meliodas’ only son is an ally and a friend of Percival’s, which is another important element from the lore.
And while these more obvious connections are quite evident, there is a symbolic one as well that we actually have to address. Namely, the role that Percival has in Four Knights of the Apocalypse is basically identical to the role that Meliodas had in The Seven Deadly Sins, so we can say that Percival is something like a spiritual successor to Meliodas in the sequel, and that seems to be one of the most important connections between the two of them in the series.
