‘Frieren’: How Old Is Frieren & What Is Her Race?

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a manga and anime series currently among the most popular anime airing. Written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a truly lovely fantasy series with great characters, one of which will be the focus of this article. We will talk about the titular protagonist, Frieren, as you will discover how old she is and what her exact race is, both of which are important questions for understanding her role in the series.

Frieren’age in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End?

When the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga and anime starter Frieren, Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen were returning from their 10-year-long adventure after managing to slay the Demon Lord, at the time, Frieren looked like a teenager. Himmel seemed to be in his 20s, Heiter in his late 20s or early 30s, and Eisen was a mystery in general. After a ceremony, the heroes parted ways, and Frieren promised her friends that she would take them to a place with a better view to see the meteor shower again; the thing is that the meteor shower appears only every 50 years.

Fast forward 50 years later, Frieren looks the same, and her friends, whom she managed to reunite, look old. Himmel is an old, bald man with a thick white beard; Heiter looks old and wrinkled; only Eisen looks more or less the same, but his appearance is specific, so it is impossible to determine how much he’s aged, although he did say that he was too weak to hold an axe at the time.

And while we’re going to explain why Frieren manages to look so young in the next section, we’re just going to say here that she is an Elf and that in the world of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Elves live incredibly long, which also means that they age differently than humans and other races. In fact, when Frieren talked about the future, she discussed things 50 or even 100 years in the future as if they were nothing, which prompted her friends to comment on how different she was from them and how Elves perceived time differently than other races.

So, based on this, we know that Frieren is much older than she looks, but how old is she exactly? Well, brace yourselves, as this might come as a shocker – she is over 1,000 years old! Yes, you’ve read that correctly… it’s not 100, it’s a thousand. Her history reveals that she was born in an Elven village more than a millennium ago, and while the exact number has not been revealed, we can, indeed, confirm that she is more than 1,000 years old, which comes as a shock since she looks like she’s in her early teens.

The series will later provide us with details from her past but don’t expect too much information about her 1,000-year-long life, as you’d probably need another manga series to detail everything that happened to her then. What race is Frieren?

If you could not tell by her appearance, Frieren is an Elf, which is more than obvious. Since the world of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a fantasy world that looks like a great DnD campaign, we have to state that the authors did their best to create their world and characters.

Now, we don’t know much about the Elves in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, so we assume that the authors intended for them to be more or less the same as the Elves that are generally present in fantasy fiction; were the Elves from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End special, the authors would have probably provided us with some details about them.

We know that the Elves are rare in the world of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, i.e., they are probably the rarest among the races seen in the show. They are exceptionally skilled and seem to have large, powerful mana reserves, so they are often mages. Frieren is also a mage and is considered one of the strongest and most skilled ones, even by Elven standards; this is why she was the strongest in her village when she was born 1,000 years ago.

What else do we know about Elves? Well, not much. We know that they can live for a very long time, as Frieren is 1,000+ years old and looks like a teenager, but their exact life expectancy is not known, as not many Elves have been seen in the series. They are also known for being very cold and reserved, and it has been stipulated on more than one occasion in the series that they have brought themselves to the brink of extinction because they have not been able to properly express their emotions. We did see Frieren cry after Himmel’s death, so we assume she is special.
