Frieren: Meet Falsch & Sense – the Two Mages Overseeing the Candidates!

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss two other characters from the series, two First-Class Mages who debuted in the most recent episode of the anime, and will have more appearances later. The two of them oversaw the candidates for the exam. Their names are Falsch and Sense, and in this article, we are going to bring you their stories from the series as it happened.
Sense is a pacifist
After parting ways with Sein and a prolonged travel, the party finally arrives in Äußerst, the magical center of the north. There, they wanted to take part in the First-Class Mage Exam so that they could continue to the Northern Plateau, as a First-Class Mage was required to travel through these parts. As Frieren explained, this was because the remnants of the Demon King’s army, as well as numerous powerful monsters, lived there, and only exceptionally skilled mages were equipped to deal with these creatures. This is why an exam was necessary.
Frieren initially told Fern that she should sign up for the exam, but Fern did not believe that she could do it and urged Frieren to do it. Frieren, on the other hand, had the necessary skills, but she was reluctant to take the exam. After Frieren explained to Fern that several important factors determined a First-Level Mage and persuaded her to take it, Frieren was also reluctantly “forced” to take it.
Namely, in case Fern failed, another exam would not be held for at least three years, and they did not have enough money to travel by boat or to hire a Mage; well, they might have had enough money, but when Fern told Frieren that they would be unable to buy sweets then, Frieren accepted and signed up for the exam as well. And that is how this story began.
Sometime later, while Genau was announcing the first part of the exam, two First-Class Mages were observing the candidates. One of them was a wall man with glasses, while the other was a short, silent girl with very long hair. The girl was Sense, and while the man commented on the candidates, she was mostly silent, simply observing. But she did notice Frieren, who was just a tad shorter than her. It turned out that Sense was an exceptionally skilled and powerful human First-Class Mage who was, along with Genau and Falsche, one of the overseers of the First-Class Exam.
She was presented as a solemn person who rarely speaks, but is very keen and observant. On top of that, she is a pacifist, unlike Genau, which was an important fact for all the candidates. Why? Well, it turned out that Sense was one of the three mages who conducted the exam, i.e., she was responsible for the second part of the exam. Knowing that she is a pacifist, her tasks were never dangerous or brutal, such as Genau’s, so her candidates were at least a bit safer. Still, she is known for putting the candidates to the test as her exams were exceptionally straining, despite not being dangerous.
Sadly, this is all we know about Sense so far; more information will be revealed later, so we won’t be spoiling everything for you here. This means that we can now tell you a bit more about Falsch.
Falsch was responsible for the third part of the exam
Remember the man who was commenting on the candidates with Sense? Well, that man is Falsch, another First-Class Mage. He observed the room carefully, and he seemed to be quite knowledgeable about some of the more prominent candidates, knowing about them and their feats, even if they were a bit shady. He seems to be a chatterbox who likes to comment on his surroundings, which is why his being paired up with Sense was hilarious – Sense is completely silent, while Falsch kept on talking and talking and talking… and talking. He wasn’t annoying or anything, but it was an interesting contrast between the two of them.
The series has not revealed much about Falsch as a character, but we do know that he is a First-Class Mage, which certainly speaks for itself. He has a rather stern and somewhat haughty appearance; he is tall and wears large glasses. He was the one who actually announced the third and final part of the First-Class Mage Exam, and so far – that is the most important thing we can say about him and his role in the series. Of course, as with Sense, the series will reveal more about him later, so we won’t be spoiling everything to you in this article.
And with this, we can actually close out this article. We have presented these two characters to you and you now know everything you need to know about them at this moment. Of course, you can look forward to more in the future!
