Frieren: Why Does Frieren Dislike Sein? The “Aversion to One’s Own Kind” Explained!

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a manga and anime series currently among the most popular anime airing. Written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a truly lovely fantasy series with great characters, one of which will be the focus of this article. We will discuss Frieren, the titular protagonist, a powerful Elf mage, and the only character who connects the present to the past. Frieren is a very specific character with lots of quirks, but she is also kind and caring. Still, in the most recent episode, she discussed the so-called “aversion to one’s own kind.” What did she mean by that? Keep reading to find out!
The “aversion to one’s own kind” is related to Frieren’s aversion to mages
During their trip to Heaven, Frieren, Fern, and Stark came to a small village where they did not plan on staying. In the Alt Woods, Frieren met Sein, who told her his life story as a bottomless swamp was swallowing him up, while Frieren was simply sitting there and listening to him. Eventually, She did help him, but it was a funny scene.
Sein told her that he had wanted to be an adventurer when he was a child and wanted to travel with his friend, Gorilla, who eventually did go on an adventure himself. He also told her that his brother had sent him to the woods to gather some herbs, which is how he ended up in the bottomless swamp. Later, when a poisonous snake bites Stark, they return to the village and meet with the local priest, who tells them that Stark will die.
He told them that he was not skilled enough to heal him, and then his brother – Sein – appeared and healed Stark instantly, demonstrating to everyone how skilled he was. Adding his former story to his skills, the party suggested they should convince Sein to join them – both because it was his own dream and because such a skilled healer would be very useful to them. After a discussion, Stark decided to go and ask him to join them, but something happened before.
While the three of them were talking about inviting Sein, Frieren was quite reluctant to do it. It wasn’t that she hated Sein, but it seemed like she disliked him (although, from time to time, it seems like she dislikes everyone; she actually doesn’t – she’s just blunt and direct!) and had an aversion towards him. When Fern asked her what was going on, she did not give any precise reason and said that it was simply an “aversion to her own kind.”
Sein was a mage, and a skilled one at that, although he specialized in different types of magic than Frieren. Frieren wasn’t jealous of him, as both of them knew that Frieren could take him out easily in a fight, but due to her experience with mages in the past, she was always careful around them. This is what she meant by that phrase; it wasn’t a reference to Elves, but rather to mages. Sein is a human, not an Elf, so it quickly became clear that Frieren was referring to something else, and we have now explained what it was.
Ultimately, Frieren agreed, and when she saw that Sein refused, she made it her mission to convince him to join them, which ultimately happened after Sein had a “discussion” with his older brother. Sein eventually decided to join them on their way so he could find his friend, and as soon as the journey started, he was scolded by Frieren, with Stark telling him that he should get used to it because Frieren was like that.
And that is how the story played out and what Frieren’s phrase actually means in the series. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
