Gambit Finally Speaks in a New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Teaser, and He’s Already Cracking Jokes
Channing Tatum’s road to playing Gambit has been one of the longest in superhero movie history. A solo ‘Gambit’ film was first confirmed to be in production at Fox as far back as 2014, only for the project to fall apart in 2019 after Disney acquired the studio. Tatum finally got his moment in 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, where a running joke was that nobody could understand Gambit’s thick Cajun accent.
That cameo quickly made him a fan favorite, and Marvel brought him back for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The first full trailer showed Tatum’s Gambit at the X-Mansion, cementing him as the official Gambit of Earth-10005 alongside Fox’s original X-Men, including Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto.
Until now, though, fans had only seen glimpses of Remy LeBeau in the Russo brothers’ film. That changed with a new teaser clip that gives Gambit his first spoken moment in the movie’s marketing.
In the footage, Gambit takes in the chaos around him and quips, “What is this? Some sort of doomsday?” It’s a fitting introduction for a character who has always paired danger with a wink, and it plays right into the film’s title.
The clip arrives as part of Marvel’s latest promotional push, which has also featured Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers and a rallying call for heroes from 3 universes to stand together against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

The line also offers a first taste of how Gambit will sound in the film. Tatum revealed in a Variety cover story that studio executives had to think carefully about how audiences would understand him, and that he decided, “I’m not gonna go full Cajun.”

He also explained that the Russo brothers want Gambit to be funny at times without losing the drama. “When Gambit gets serious — when he drops the Mardi Gras mask — things do matter,” he said.

Tatum has hinted that Gambit will be part of a big fight with Doctor Doom. Official Hasbro merchandise for the film describes Gambit as preferring Cajun charm over violence, while warning that he won’t go down quietly when he and the X-Men face the end of their world.
Production wasn’t easy, either. Tatum suffered an injury on set that sidelined him from some action scenes, with his stunt double handling the heavy lifting while he filmed close-ups. Plenty about Gambit’s role remains under wraps. A recent rumor suggests he could share sarcastic banter with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, though that hasn’t been confirmed.

Merchandise has also fueled speculation. A Beast Kingdom mini-figure gives Gambit comic-accurate red eyes, sparking theories that he could tap into new levels of power during the film.

Tatum has said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told him the studio loves the character, even though no standalone Gambit film has been announced. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving in theaters on December 18, Marvel is clearly ramping up its character spotlights.
If this first line is any indication, Gambit’s signature humor will provide some welcome levity amid the multiversal chaos. For Tatum, who spent more than a decade fighting to bring the character to life, hearing Gambit speak in an Avengers film is a long-awaited payoff.
