‘Gamera Rebirth’: All Main Characters & Kaiju Ages, Heights & More
‘Gamera: Rebirth’ is one of the many stories from the subgenre of fantasy and science-fiction genre, simply called “kaiju.” This rich Japanese genre became popular with Godzilla projects that arrived in the Western World many decades ago, and although the genre isn’t as popular as it was during the 1960s, we still get some great projects. Netflix streaming platform released six episodes of the show earlier this month, and the Japanese series was really interesting.
The story of four children facing a great scientific and political conspiracy in Japan that could negatively affect the whole world, and the kaiju, which wants to protect humanity, was a really good reminder of how the “kaiju” genre is very much alive. In this article, we will bring you all the details about the main characters and kaiju, including ages, heights, and more.

What do we know about ‘Gamera: Rebirth’ characters’ ages and birthdays?
First of all, it’s important to note that the series was set in the summer of 1989. The Gamera franchise has had many projects in the past, with past movies and TV series being set in another timeline.
In other words, Japan had a special political period that lasted during the reigns of their respective emperors. For example, we have the Godzilla and Gamera series being developed during Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito) between 1926 and 1989, regarded as Shōwa period.
This means many variations of the kaiju and other characters are irrelevant to Netflix’s show. The current political period in Japan started in 2019 when the new Emperor, Narihito. This era is called the Reiwa period, and the “kaiju” genre from today’s era is called the Reiwa Series.
Since we know (from the official ‘Gamera: Rebirth’ website and the show) how old most of the main protagonists and kaiju are, it was easy to determine when everyone was born.
This doesn’t apply to Dr. Tazaki and Dr. Emiko, whose ages were never disclosed in the show, and it’s unnecessary to speculate their ages. If we HAD to do it, Tazaki would have to be in his mid-thirties, while Emiko should be in her late thirties.
Kaiju in ‘Gamera: Rebirth’ is interesting since the show gives viewers some information regarding age or timeline. For example, in episode six, titled ‘Childhood’s End,’ we learn that Gamera was revived 100,000 years ago with the strange contraption that children relay to the Eustace Foundation scientist to help the monster.
Viras and S-Gyaos are in the same “boat” as Gamera, with S-Gyaos being only three months old after the Foundation found the specimen and developed it after New Guinea.
Nevertheless, the characters’ ages are mostly clear in the ‘Gamera: Rebirth’ show, which does help the viewers (and us) to determine the timeline and more info about the show.
What do we know about ‘Gamera: Rebirth’ characters’ heights?
This section was mostly speculation, especially after we learned that one of the main protagonists Boco, is officially 142 centimeters high. Besides Boco, no other characters have information about their height or weight, so we had to rewatch some scenes and determine the heights from the show.
It seems silly, but it might be close enough in the grand scheme of things. For example, Boco is the shortest of his friend group, with Joe and Junichi at least 2 inches taller than him. I put a three-inch difference since some scenes really indicate how Boco is shorter and younger than the rest of the crew.
Brody is obviously the tallest in his friend group. His whole story arc begins as the bully of three friends, trying to intimidate them with his height and take their money. Interestingly enough, he is at least a head taller than both Junichi and Joe, while Boco reaches the blonde’s chest. Brody is half-American and half-Japanese, so he is taller than his friends.
This is indicative of the picture above, where we see all of the “human” characters standing beside each other. Despite being the tallest of the group, Brody is still a 12-year-old boy, so it would be funny if he was taller than the adult in Dr. Tazaki (‘Kuroko no Basuke’ characters are an exception). All jokes aside, Tazaki is towering over all the children, making him at least 20 centimeters taller than them.
Of course, this could be speculation – I estimated that Tazaki is somewhere between 175 cm and 180 cm. Japanese people aren’t the tallest people in the world, so this information seems plausible. Also, only if a person has mixed ancestry that character would be taller than usual in most cases – Brody is a great example of that.
Dr. Emiko is the same as Dr. Tazaki, while Kaiju is different. We already mentioned that these Kaiju appeared in many previous ‘Godzilla’ or ‘Gamera’ projects before. There are movies and series from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s in which the monsters had different designs, high lore, and everything else.
Thankfully, this aspect didn’t affect the monsters at all – we know from the official websites and scenes from the show how big the monsters are in ‘Gamera: Rebirth.’
For example, the “star,” Gamera, is at least 60 meters big, towering over most buildings in Tokyo. S-Gyaos is a bit taller (bigger) if we consider that it is essentially a bird-like dinosaur creature that eats people. It is definitely taller than the giant turtle.
Maybe that calculation isn’t 100 percent right, but still, it makes sense for the show. Finally, we have Viras, an ancient squid-like creature that towers over both Gamera and S-Gyaos kaiju, at least from the scenes of the show. Historically, these creatures were either incredibly big or smaller in different projects, but ‘Gamera: Rebirth’ found some kind of a compromise, and frankly, it worked.
