George Miller Teases Next ‘Mad Max’ Prequel—Script Ready, But Timing Uncertain!

George Miller, the mastermind behind the Mad Max franchise, was the star of this year’s Vulture Stunt Awards. His latest film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, may not have been the biggest box office hit, but it was widely praised by critics. The movie won Best Action Film and dominated the stunt categories, especially for its thrilling Stowaway sequence.
This scene, where the Octoboss and his soldiers attack the War Rig, won in three different categories. Additionally, Hayley Wright, who was Anya Taylor-Joy’s stunt double, won Best Achievement in Stunts Overall.
Miller has been creating high-energy action scenes since his first film, Mad Max, in 1979. Over the years, he has seen how action and stunt work have changed. In fact, he has played a big role in shaping modern action filmmaking. However, he still believes that the fundamentals of filmmaking come from the silent film era, where movement and visual storytelling were key.
While Furiosa was a critical success, it did not perform as well as expected at the box office. Many fans are wondering if Miller will make more Mad Max movies in the future.
In a recent interview, Miller revealed that he has another Mad Max script ready. However, he has many stories he wants to tell, and Mad Max is just one of them.
Over the years, he has become so used to creating stories that he now has too many ideas, some in his head, others written as scripts or detailed notes. He describes himself as a “professional daydreamer,” meaning he constantly imagines new stories. As a child, this was seen as a bad thing, as his teachers noted that he spent too much time daydreaming instead of focusing on schoolwork.
We’ve got another script. But having been doing this long enough where I’m habituated to storytelling, I find myself with way too many stories — not only in my head, but in the form of screenplays or at least very detailed notes that are within reach of screenplays. I’m a professional daydreamer, really. This was seen as my big deficit as a kid: “George would do better at school if he didn’t daydream so much” was on my report card.
Regarding Mad Max, he confirms that he has a script, but it is not his next project. He has two other films he wants to make first. However, he does not rule out making another Mad Max movie in the future. He explains that filmmaking is unpredictable—sometimes everything falls into place, and sometimes it doesn’t. So, while he is open to making the movie if the timing is right, nothing is certain yet.
So, there’s lots of stories. Indeed, one of them is a Mad Max. It is not something I would do next, because there’s two things I’m keen to do next. But if for whatever reason the planets align, you can never tell. Too often, you’re lining up to do a movie and then something happens. Some things fall into place and some don’t, so all I can say is we’ll see.
