Gina Carano Assembles Her Own Team of Avengers to Take on Disney in a High-Profile Lawsuit!
Gina Carano is best known recently for her role as Cara Dune in the first two seasons of The Mandalorian. The studio appeared to have significant plans for both her and her character, including a proposed standalone show.
However, these plans changed following a series of controversial social media posts in which Carano made comparisons between anti-vaxxers and Jews and addressed other sensitive topics that clashed with Disney’s image. As a result, she was terminated from the series.
This situation has resulted in a lawsuit reportedly funded by Elon Musk, who has pledged to support any employee facing discrimination due to their personal views. Carano is currently suing Disney for $75,000 and seeks to be reinstated by Lucasfilm.
Disney filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, but it was recently denied. Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett of California ruled that Disney did not provide sufficient evidence to show that they employ contractors solely to maintain a positive public image.
Defendants have not identified any evidence—in the Complaint or otherwise—to substantiate a claim that they employ public-facing actors for the purpose of promoting the ‘values of respect,’ ‘decency,’ ‘integrity,’ or ‘inclusion. […] Accordingly, Defendants’ invocation of the supposedly detrimental effects of Plaintiff’s ‘mere presence’ as one of Defendants’ employees lacks constitutional import.
At this stage in the litigation, the Court cannot conclude, as Defendants urge it to, that Plaintiff’s continued employment by Defendants would inhibit or intrude upon Defendants’ rights to expressive association.
The lawsuit is now moving towards either a trial or settlement, with Carano having compiled an impressive list of witnesses, including some surprising names. According to THR, the list features Pedro Pascal, Jon Favreau, and former Disney CEO Bob Chapek.
Carano and Disney’s joint filing also includes Bear Grylls, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and Lynne Hale as potential witnesses. The court document from July 26 outlines key issues for the trial, tentatively scheduled for September 25, 2025, such as whether Carano was under contract when Disney allegedly terminated her for her right-wing social media posts.
Another issue in Gina Carano’s lawsuit is whether she was treated unfairly compared to her male co-stars. Carano alleges that Disney and Lucasfilm overlooked offensive posts made by others, such as Pedro Pascal’s comparisons of former President Trump to Hitler and his likening of U.S. immigration policies to concentration camps, while she was terminated for her cultural and religious beliefs.
The lawsuit also questions whether Jon Favreau will testify about Disney’s approval of a new spinoff, Rangers of the New Republic, which was planned to feature Carano’s character, Cara Dune. Kathleen Kennedy confirmed the production of this spinoff in 2020.
Bear Grylls may be called to testify regarding allegations that Disney removed an episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls featuring Carano after her termination. Disney has contested Carano’s list of witnesses and suggested that they might call Lucasfilm VP Carrie Beck and Disney EVP Paul Roeder to testify.
