Noble Fencer was an independent adventurer until she bought a racetrack
The story of the character we are going to talk about here is an odd one. Well, it’s not strange in a bad way, but there have been several changes in her life that are important to note, which is actually why we have decided to talk about her in the first place, as she is quite interesting. As we’ve said, she was known as Noble Fencer, but she is now known as Female Merchant, and this article will tell you all you need to know about her.
As we’ve said, Noble Fencer was born into a noble family. You can take a guess about all the privileges that were assigned to her by birth and how she was actually born in a pretty good place. But, Noble Fencer was different, as she did not simply want to enjoy the benefits assigned to her by birth. She wanted more. She had a rebellious personality, and she did not want to go through life being protected by her noble heritage. She actually wanted to become an independent woman, and on top of that, she also wanted to become an adventurer, so you can guess what happened: she left her family, broke all ties with them, and then went on her own journey to become a Gold or Platinum Adventurer.
She played a major role in Volume 5 of the light novel series, as well as the anime movie Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown, which adapted her story in anime format.
When we first meet her, she is introduced as a proud character who is (too) sure of herself; she will, however, learn temperance as well as humility alongside Goblin Slayer and his friends, and gain wisdom. At the head of a group, she went to the Snowy Mountains on a quest to exterminate Goblins, but did not return: the Goblin Slayer, sponsored with his companions by her parents and through the help of the Sword Maiden, then leaves in their footsteps by following the trail of the Goblins and finds her in the mountains in their lair, in pitiful condition but alive.
A victim of their inexperience as well as her own pride, it will turn out that she and her companions ended up being caught in their own trap, with her plan consisting, originally, of wearing down the Goblins by besieging the entrance to their lair to starve them: themselves weakened by hunger and cold, however, her group was massacred during their absence in the neighboring village to beg for food and she, taken by surprise on her return and captured.
Although they found her alive, she was nevertheless tortured by the Goblins (in particular, they left a brand with a hot iron) before the Goblin Slayer’s party frees her from her captivity. Despite what she has been through, she sees an opportunity to take her revenge against the Goblins by saving her benefactors – and their expert exterminator – and the aforementioned village from a future attack by a larger horde installed in an abandoned fort with the other captive victims, and in the process recover his precious sword which had been taken from him by his executioners. In addition to her sword skills, which is a family treasure, she can also use lightning magic.
That is her original story, but after the incident on Snowy Mountain, Noble Fencer changed, and we are now going to reveal what happened.
Since then, she has been known as Female Merchant
The traumatic experience she had changed her significantly, and she promised that she would make amends with her family, which she did in the interim period after Volume 5. She became a merchant once again, and once she amassed even more funds, she bought a Centaur Racetrack and became an independent businesswoman, which was a very important moment in her story. It is also in this period that the author officially renamed her Female Merchant, sending the name Noble Fencer into oblivion.
But, she herself did not enter oblivion. Namely, she ultimately became an advisor to the King and returned in a bigger capacity in Volume 8 of the light novel, where she assisted Goblin Slayer and his party by providing them with horses from her stables. Female Merchant did not disappear from the story, but her role has diminished since she stopped being an adventurer, so we are now talking about a secondary character, but a very influential secondary character nevertheless.
