Few PlayStation reveals in recent memory have sparked as much excitement as ‘God of War Laufey’. Santa Monica Studio unveiled the game at the close of a State of Play in June, putting Faye, Kratos’ late wife and the mother of Atreus, in the lead role for the first time.

The PS5 exclusive was set for February 2027, and fans have been counting down ever since. Pre-orders are already live, and a physical Collector’s Edition has been released without the game itself.

Now fans will have to wait a little longer. As Pop Base reported, ‘God of War Laufey’ has been delayed by 3 months and will now launch on May 20, 2027. Santa Monica Studio confirmed the change in a statement posted on X.

The studio said it has been deeply grateful for the excitement around Faye’s journey through the Everywhen since the June reveal, and that it doesn’t take for granted the trust fans have placed in the team.

The studio didn’t give a specific reason for the delay beyond the need for more development time. In its statement, Santa Monica Studio said it wants to make the most of each moment until launch by adding the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.

The team closed by thanking fans for their patience and promising more updates soon. Screen Rant described it as an unplanned but fairly standard postponement and suggested the game is unlikely to slip much further.

‘God of War Laufey’ shifts the focus away from Kratos and Atreus. After her death, Faye awakens in the Everywhen, a land where ruthless gods from across mythology seek power.

She fights her way through this world after discovering that her plans to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk. The game’s gameplay trailer also showed moments that intersect with Kratos’ adventure.

The reveal featured a 20-minute gameplay trailer that showcased combat, enemies, and side characters. According to GamesRadar+, the action is faster and more acrobatic than in previous entries, with Deborah Ann Woll describing Faye’s combat as spinning, whipping and flipping through the air.

Faye also wields the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, which can detach enemies’ souls from their bodies with a golden palm strike. Her soul-related abilities are reportedly amplified in the Everywhen.

Woll returns as Faye, the role she previously voiced in ‘God of War Ragnarök’. She’s joined by Jack Quaid as Phranque, a sentient cube who travels with Faye. Perlina Lau plays Rue, the guardian of the sword Faye uses in combat. Together, they bring a fresh set of companions to a series long defined by the bond between Kratos and his son.

The delay moves the game from early 2027 into the second quarter of the year. That gives Santa Monica Studio extra breathing room as major releases like ‘GTA 6’ continue to dominate the conversation.

For fans, the new date means a few extra months before stepping into the Everywhen. If the studio’s promise of a more polished experience holds, the wait could make Faye’s first solo adventure even stronger.

How do you feel about God of War Laufey being delayed until May 2027?
