C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia is one of the most beloved children’s series and one of the best-known fantasy works in the history of literature. The stories of the Pevensie family and their friends and allies in the fictional world of Narnia are spread through seven books, starting with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) and ending with The Last Battle (1956). The series is Lewis’ best-known work even today and while most people have been acquainted with it through the books, there are some who snuck into the world of Narnia via the film adaptations from several years ago.

Three movies were adapted back then and while there were plans to adapt The Silver Chair as well, these failed and in 2018, it was announced that Netflix had acquired the rights to adapt the series in movie and television series format. As things stand now, the first film could begin shooting as early as August this year!

Namely, sometime ago, it was announced that Greta Gerwing signed on to direct the Narnia films for Netflix and while it was not clear whether she would be directing the whole series or not, she was quite excited, as she herself said:

“I’m slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for Narnia. I loved Narnia so much as a child. As an adult, I see Lewis as a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by doing this. It’s something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by. I also have to say, as a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly because, you know, it’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should, you know, treat it with extra care. It is not our countrymen.”

This excitement is certainly good, as the acclaimed Oscar-nominated director and filmmaker will definitely do a great job in adapting Lewis’ classic tales and in presenting these stories to a new audience.

As far as things stand now, Gerwig will start by adapting the first two books in movie format, and based on what we know, shooting could start in August 2024, which means that the movie could be released sometime next year. On the other hand, all other information is very scarce and we actually don’t know much about the series as a whole, save for the fact that Gerwig has signed on to direct at least two of the movies. Matthew Aldrich will serve as the creative architect behind the adaptation, while Mark Gordon, Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber will serve as executive producers.

Early pre-production has already started in the United Kingdom and based on early reports, filming could start in Britain in August and would, as rumored, last at least seven months, which would mean that the movies wouldn’t be released before late 2025 or even 2026, based on how long post-producton lasts. As of the time of writing, no casting information has been released and we don’t even know whether there is a complete script at this moment. But, we are definitely going to keep you up-to-date, so be sure to keep following us!
