Greta Gerwig’s First ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ Movie Could Begin Filming in August!

The Chronicles of Narnia, a classic children’s series by C.S. Lewis, has captured hearts for decades. Spanning seven books, it began with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950 and wrapped up with The Last Battle in 1956. The tales follow the Pevensie siblings and their adventures in the magical land of Narnia.
While the books are Lewis’ most famous work, some fans discovered Narnia through movies released years ago. Three films were made back then, but plans for a fourth, The Silver Chair, fell apart. In 2018, Netflix stepped in, securing rights to turn the series into both films and TV shows.
Now, there’s big news. Greta Gerwig, an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, is set to direct at least two Narnia movies for Netflix. She’s thrilled about it, though a bit nervous too.
Gerwig shared her thoughts: “I’m slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for Narnia. I loved Narnia so much as a child. As an adult, I see Lewis as a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by doing this. It’s something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by. I also have to say, as a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly because, you know, it’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should, you know, treat it with extra care. It is not our countrymen.”
Filming could start soon—possibly August 2024—in the United Kingdom. Early prep work is already underway there. Reports suggest shooting might take at least seven months. If that holds, the first movie might not hit screens until late 2025 or even 2026, depending on post-production. Gerwig will tackle the first two books first, adapting them into films. Matthew Aldrich is overseeing the project’s creative direction, while Mark Gordon, Douglas Gresham, and Vincent Sieber are executive producers.
Details are still thin. No casting news has emerged yet, and it’s unclear if the script is fully ready. Still, Gerwig’s passion for Narnia promises a fresh take for new viewers. We’ll keep tracking this story and bring you updates as they come. Stay tuned!
