James Gunn recently talked about his future at DC, confirming that he’s working on one more The Suicide Squad spin-off series, and he also teased that Peacemaker Season 2 might happen after all. Now, Gunn opened up about his future at Marvel, for which he’s currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set to debut in theaters in May 2023, and Guardians of the Galaxy: The Holiday Special, which will premiere on Disney+ next Holiday Season.
Although this was quite expected, Gunn now confirmed that the upcoming third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will bring closure to the team that first assembled in 2014 in Gunn’s original movie. They also reappeared in their own sequel — Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – and crossover movies Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper are returning one last time to play the original members of the Guardians, as well as Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Sylvester Stallone who are reprising their respective MCU roles.
“This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians. “I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. That’s always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best. I’m aware that the third film in most trilogies sucks; not always.” — James Gunn for Deadline
Of course, this is MCU. These Guardians might be done after the third movie, but there’s always a chance that some new team will be formed, and some members of the original Guardians team might make a comeback some way in the future of the MCU. Only time will tell. And let’s not forget that we will watch Guardians this summer in the upcoming movie Thor: Love and Thunder. Although Gunn previously teased there will be some shocking and heartbreaking moments in the third Guardians movie, we can only hope that everyone will get their happy ending.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to debut on May 5, 2023 in theaters.
