The Guardians of the Galaxy will finally return in 2023 in Volume 3 of what has become one of the most popular superhero groups in the galaxy. Of course, the fact that we are in the middle of the San Diego Comic Con means that there are going to be announcements regarding the future of the MCU. In that regard, there were announcements related to Guardians of the Galaxy, which will be one of the upcoming MCU movies for Phase Five.

That said, a trailer was shown to the audience present at the SDCC as they were able to see a sneak preview of what could happen in the movie. This scene is yet to be released officially, but fans have already been talking about the teaser. That is why we are here to break down what happened in the teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

What Happens In The Guardians Of The Galaxy Trailer?

The fact that we are in the middle of the San Diego Comic Con means that Marvel Studios has a lot of things in store for fans out there. There were plenty of announcements regarding the future of the MCU, but the one thing we already knew is the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is going to happen in 2023.

James Gunn, the writer and director of the movie, allowed fans present during the SDCC a sneak preview of what could happen in the movie. This wasn’t necessarily a trailer but was more of a teaser of certain scenes. Nevertheless, let’s look at what we saw in the trailer that was released during the SDCC.

In that trailer, Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora is now working as a Ravager, which used to be Peter Quill’s job before he became the de facto leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Of course, we know for a fact that this is a different Gamora because the original one had been sacrificed by Thanos so that he could acquire the Soul Stone. Meanwhile, this one was the Gamora that came from the past and before the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. That means that she isn’t familiar with Quill and any of the other Guardians except for Nebula.

Peter Quill saw Gamora and told her that he still loved her. It was clear that he never loved her any less. However, Gamora told Quill that the Gamora he knew was no more and that she doesn’t share the same feelings that he has for her. Of course, during the entire time, the rest of the Guardians were somewhere around the vicinity, overhearing the embarrassing conversation between Quill and Gamora.

The trailer, which is soundtracked by The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize” (clearly James Gunn’s choice of music), also introduced new characters like Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock. Chukwudi Iwuji also appears as the High Evolutionary, who actually appeared during the events of Comic Con in his High Evolutionary costume.

It is worth mentioning that this movie occurs after the Guardians of the Galaxy team up with Thor for a while, as seen in the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, where the God of Thunder had to leave the group so that he could investigate what had been happening to the gods around the universe. Meanwhile, the Guardians of the Galaxy had to say goodbye to their most powerful member because they needed to help the people affected by Gorr’s god-butchering rampage.

What Are The Other Guardians Up To?

Another key image that fans were able to see during the sneak preview of the trailer was the fact that Rocket Racoon was seen as a baby. Gunn, of course, said that the movie will explore a good part of Rocket’s origins and where he came from. He also went on to say that Rocket has “got to be the saddest creature in the universe, and that’s what it is partly about,” as it is clear that he has a sad backstory that the movie will explore in what Gunn says is going to be the concluding film for the Guardians.

There was also a part where Gunn said that Karen Gillan’s Nebula is now beginning to find herself more because this was the first time in a very long time that she was already free from Thanos. It is clear that she wants to find out more about herself in this movie.

But the sad part is that, as mentioned, Gunn said that this would be the final movie for the Guardians of the Galaxy as everything will be wrapped up in the trilogy of this epic MCU film franchise. Nevertheless, he said that “it doesn’t mean everybody dies.” That probably means that the movie will only wrap the characters’ stories so that they can all live their lives individually. Still, we are expecting that one of them will die.

In attendance during the release of the trailer were Pratt, Gillan, Poulter, Klementieff, and Bakalova (who will be voicing Cosmo the Dog). It was clear that all of them were emotional upon seeing the trailer for the first time because they knew for a fact that this was their final time working together in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. But, considering that the MCU is large and that there will be a lot more movies to come, it is possible that they will return in the future.

As mentioned, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is part of Phase Five of the MCU, and that means that it could play a role in the overall development of the multiversal plot that is at the center of the Multiverse Saga, which will cover Phases Four, Five, and Six. In that regard, there is a possibility that we will see the Guardians again in a future movie involving crossover events, and Avengers: Secret Wars might be one of those movies.

Nevertheless, the announcement that this would be the final movie in the franchise means that some of the characters will probably never return in the future. And that means that they would be leaving huge holes that other characters in the future might be ready enough to fill.
