Gundam Just Rebooted Its Own Universe, And Ghost In The Shell’s Director Is Steering It
Few franchises in anime have earned the kind of institutional weight that ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ carries. Nearly five decades after Yoshiyuki Tomino’s original series introduced the world to giant robots wrestling with the ethics of war, the brand remains one of Bandai Namco’s most valuable properties, spinning off new series, films, and games almost every year.
That legacy is currently getting a full victory lap. Sunrise Studios is marking its 50th anniversary with a sweeping retrospective project, and a newly revealed key visual spotlights fifty of its most acclaimed works pulled from a catalog of over five hundred titles, with ‘Gundam’ entries like ‘Char’s Counterattack,’ ‘Wing,’ ‘SEED,’ ‘Unicorn,’ and ‘The Witch from Mercury’ all represented.
Amid that celebration, DiscussingFilm shared the first trailer clip for a brand new ‘Gundam’ anime series set to release in 2027, and the timing was no accident. Bandai Namco Filmworks used its ‘GUNDAM Showcase 2026’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con to confirm the project’s full identity, a series called ‘Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO,’ set in a universe no prior ‘Gundam’ story has ever touched.
The name attached to the director’s chair is turning heads across the anime world. The new anime anchors a next generation initiative called the RG Project, a multimedia universe built around a new world envisioned by Kenji Kamiyama, the filmmaker behind ‘Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex,’ with worldbuilding developed alongside novelist Toh EnJoe. Sola Animation is handling production on the series.
The new timeline has been branded ‘After Apocalypse,’ and it will also serve as the foundation for an upcoming action game called ‘Gundam Rogue Orbit,’ with the anime and game telling interconnected stories across different generations rather than adapting one another. The two projects unfold a full century apart, in an era where humanity struggles to survive alongside evolving silicon lifeforms, and the anime follows an orphaned Gundam pilot named Ray Azumi. His mobile suit is described in press materials as a state of the art experimental anti Apocalypse machine, visually set apart by a cloak unlike anything seen on a mainline Gundam unit before.
Speaking through a translator during the SDCC panel, Kamiyama explained that an anti war message sits at the center of the ‘Gundam’ universe, and that the outbreak of a real world conflict while the team was developing the story pushed him to think harder about how an individual like Ray would actually experience war, according to a panel report from Comics Beat.
The creative team extends well beyond Kamiyama himself. Eiichi Shimizu is designing the Gundam units, Stato handled original character designs that Miyako Takasu is now adapting as chief animation director, and composer Gō Shiina, known for scoring ‘Demon Slayer’ and ‘Tales of Zestiria,’ is writing the music.
For a franchise built on the idea that mechanized warfare should always come with a human cost, ‘Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO’ looks like it wants to honor that tradition while starting completely from scratch. Does an entirely new timeline excite you more than another visit to the Universal Century, or does Ray Azumi have big shoes to fill?
