James Gunn Refutes Rumors Regarding Development of ‘The Batman’ Part 2 & 3

DC’s movie adaptations of comics currently have two live-action Batmen. One is in Gunn’s upcoming ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ while the other is part of a project spun off from the DCEU under the ‘Elseworlds’ label: Matt Reeves’s ‘The Batman,’ starring Robert Pattinson.

‘The Batman’ was intended to be the first in a trilogy of movies. Shortly after its release, ‘The Batman – Part II’ was announced. In December 2021, Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves discussed ideas for future Batman films, including introducing Robin and featuring various villains like the Court of Owls. Then, in April 2022, Warner Bros. announced the development of the next Batman film, with Matt Reeves directing and Robert Pattinson starring.

The movie experienced delays a few months ago, and there has been no news since. However, a rumor recently circulated on social media suggesting that Parts 2 and 3 would be filmed back-to-back in 2025.

This news surprised fans, especially since Part 3 has not been officially confirmed by the studio and will likely depend on the success of Part 2. As James Gunn currently represents DC Studio on social media, he took it upon himself to address and dispel these rumors.

While announcing Freddie Stroma’s return as Vigilante in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, Gunn was asked about the rumor of Parts 2 and 3 being filmed back-to-back in 2025. He responded, “It is not true.”

After news of the delay, the movie, initially set for October 2025, is now expected to premiere on October 2, 2026. Various reasons have been speculated for the delay, from the SAG-AFTRA strike to theories about James Gunn avoiding competition for his own Batman project.

Filming for ‘The Batman Part II’ is scheduled to start in April next year, with cast announcements expected this fall. While some fans find this timeline a bit late, whatever is currently unfolding with the film will likely become clear later on.

Details regarding the cast and plot of the movie remain mostly unknown. Have something to contribute? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
