‘Halo’: Here’s Why Makee Can’t Interact With the Keystone

In episode 5 of ‘Halo’ Season 2 we learned that Makee and Cortana were purposely misleading Var ‘Gatanai and leading him on a wild goose chase regarding the Ringworld. Now in Episode 6 it seems that other members of Var ‘Gatanai’s crew aren’t so kind in treating humans and don’t really buy whatever Makee is selling them. Makee knows that her time alive is running short, and she confesses to Makee that she can no longer interact with the artifacts and actually has no way of leading Var ‘Gatanai to the planet from her vision. So what happened? Why can’t Makee no longer receive visions from the Artifact?

Makee is disposable for the Covenant and things will take a turn for the worse when they figure out that she is lying

Back in the finale of Season 1 of ‘Halo’ we’ve learned that despite Makee being pampered by the Covenant they planned on getting rid of her as soon as she managed to lead them to Halo.

However, before the whole map could be projected Makee was seemingly killed by Kai, and the UNSC took and secured both artifacts leaving Makee with the Covenant. They subsequently obviously managed to save her life, but it’s clear that their dynamic has changed.

The next time we saw Makee was in Visegrad when she and her crew of elite Covenant soldiers infiltrated the command center and stole the artifact, killing the Cobalt team in the process. Despite having Artifact in her possessions she still failed to interact with it. Var ‘Gatanai became suspicious of her and he decided to follow his order and return to the Hierarchs to High Charity where Makee would be, we can assume, executed.

Cortana saved her life at the last second, projecting the image of Halo, Var ‘Gatanai was enchanted with what he saw and he believed that Makee was doing it. He decides to turn the ship around, defy the order, and continue searching for the Halo with Makee, all the time believing that Makee does in fact interact with the Artifact that is supposedly guiding her way.

Makee lost connection to the Artifact on Raas Kkhotskha

In episode 6, we saw that the priest and the rest of the Covenant forces became convinced that Makee was manipulating the Arbiter and lying to him. He denied it and commanded Makee to lead him to Halo. Makee started searching through the Galactic map in order to *feel* something and Cortana started mocking her for obviously guessing the direction instead of listening to the artifact. This is when Makee broke down and admitted that she no longer has access to visions, no matter how much she tried, and that something has changed.

She suspects that it’s due to the change in the relationship between her and Master Chief. It’s possible that when the two of them touched the Artifact together something within them fused and now they can’t access the visions by themselves, they need to interact with the Artifacts together, it doesn’t matter whether they are at the same place or separated but they need to touch them together. This is also something that we’ve seen at the end of episode 6. This is most likely because Master Chief and Makee are soul mates and destined to uncover the Halo together for some kind of greater purpose.

It’s also possible that Makee lost the connection to the artifact when she seemingly died, but this is a personal theory and I don’t have much to support it because I can’t prove that Makee truly died. She could just as well have been horribly injured and dying but the Covenant has advanced medical tech that was able to save her life.
