Harry Potter: All 10 LGBTQ Characters in Movies and Books

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, created by the author J.K. Rowling, is one of the most popular high fantasy franchises in the world. Books, movies, and videogames captivated fans for over two decades, and over those years, hundreds of characters have been introduced.
Now, the most well-known LGBTQ characters in ‘Harry Potter’ are Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald, who were in a loving romantic relationship in their youth before Grindelwald’s beliefs turned him dark. However, they aren’t the only LGBTQ characters in the movies, books, and canon video games. Here’s a complete list of all 12 such characters in ‘Harry Potter.’
Honorable mention: Charlie Weasley
We are not putting Charlie Weasley on the list officially, but I found some fan theories interesting enough to at least mention them. ‘J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life’ is a documentary film that was shot over a year when Rowling was finishing up her last Harry Potter book: ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.’
The movie included numerous interview clips and questions answered by the author. One of those questions was: is Charlie Weasley gay?
J.K. answered no, but added that Charlie is also ‘more interested in dragons than women.’ While that isn’t an explicit statement, some fans took that as evidence that Charlie Weasly was canonically asexual. Whether it is actually true has never been confirmed, though, but can you blame the guy? I mean, it’s dragons!
Albus Dumbledore
Albus Dumbledore is one of the greatest wizards in history, and one of the most beloved characters in the Harry Potter universe. He was single while serving as a professor and headmaster of Hogwarts, but in his youth – as we learned in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise – Albus was in love with Gellert Grindelwald.
The two were in a romantic relationship that Albus once described as ‘more than brothers.’ In fact, the two were so in love that they formed a magical Blood Pact, preventing them from ever going against each other.
Once Grindelwald turned dark and went on a crusade against Muggles, Dumbledore realized how blinded by love he was to Gellert’s malevolence, and how awful Grindelwald’s actions were. It was, as he put it, the biggest regret he had.
Gellert Grindelwald
Gellert Grindelwald was romantically involved with Albus and had a Blood Pact with him that prevented them from ever turning on each other.
Grindelwald and Dumbledore had their ‘For the Greater Good’ plan, which was basically pushed by Gellert’s anti-Muggle views and opinions. He wanted the wizards to step out of the shadows and take over the world, subduing the lesser Muggles instead of hiding from them.
Dumbledore was blinded by love for Grindelwald for a while, but once Gellert revealed himself to be a Dark wizard, the veil dropped, and Albus was appalled by his actions. Still, the Blood Pact kept Albus from fighting Gellert himself when Grindelwald went rogue, but he eventually ended up in Azkaban prison for the rest of his days.
Mirabel Garlick
Mirabel Garlick is a Hogwarts Legacy character – a recent video game hit that is considered Harry Potter canon. Garlick was a Muggle-born witch from London who was sorted into Hufflepuff during her time in Hogwarts. She was prolific in Herbology, and later worked at Hogwarts as a Herbology teacher.
Mirabel’s closest relationship in life was probably her friend Sirona Ryan, who was a barkeeper. However, it never blossomed into anything romantic, and Garlick was a single with for all we know.
That being said in the book ‘The Art and Making of Hogwarts Legacy,’ an entry about Professor Garlick states: ‘She has yet to meet the right witch, but at present is content with her life at Hogwarts.’ That pimples Mirabel was a lesbian, but just didn’t have luck in terms of dating.
Sirona Ryan
Sirona Ryan was, as we mentioned, Professor Garlick’s best friend and the owner of the Three Broomsticks Inn in Hogsmeade. Ryan was a transgender woman who was very kind and protective of her patrons. At Hogwarts, Sirona was in Ravenclaw, and met Garlick when the latter was a first-year student, and Ryan was in her seventh year.
Sirona Ryan is the first transgender character in the Wizarding World, be it games, films, or books, and she was voiced by Rebecca Root for the ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ game.
Nora Treadwell
Nora Treadwell was a Muggle-born witch that would become an archaeologist and a Merlin historian. She was a Ravenclaw at Hogwarts, which is also where she met her fellow student, Priya – that would later become her wife.
The couple explored the Trials of Merlin and stayed at the Three Broomsticks Inn during their expedition.
Priya Treadwell
Another ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ LGBTQ character was Priya Treadwell, a former Hogwarts student that was a member of Hufflepuff. She was a student when she met Nora, the Ravenclaw student who later became Priya’s wife, whom she married as soon as they finished school.
Unlike Nora, who had historian affinities, Priya was a brilliant potioneer who owned her own potions shop in Knockturn Alley.
Tulip Karasu
Another LGBT character that comes from a videogame is Tulip Karasu, an important character in the ‘Hogwarts Mystery’ game. Tulip attended Hogwarts as a member of Ravelclaw in the 1980s, and was known as an intelligent yet eccentric witch who didn’t have a strong affinity for rules.
As one of the lead writers for the game revealed on Twitter, Tulip had feelings for a fellow student and friend, Merula Snyde, although a lot of that story was eventually cut from the game’s storyline, as their friendship and ‘betrayal’ had more significance to the story.
Ruby Honeysuckle
Ruby Honeysuckle was also a character in ‘Hogwarts Mystery’ who worked in the British Ministry of Magic as a Rare, Obscure, and Confounding Case Division agent. Honeysuckle was from Texas and was born to a farming wizard family. She attended Ilvermony School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and was a member of the Pukwudgie House.
We learn in the game that Ruby had a girlfriend, although not much was elaborated about their relationship. Honeysuckle was killed in an incident at a charity auction in 1991, but according to reports, she saved many lives before losing her own.
Mathilda Grimblehawk
Mathilda Grimblehawk was a Magizoologist that worked in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures in the early 2020s. We met her in the ‘Fantastic Beasts: Cases from the Wizarding World’ mobile video game as an NPC, but quite an important character.
Matilda attended Hogwarts and loved Potions, but she evidently prospered mostly in Care of Magical Creatures, as she became a Magizoologist like Newt Scamander in the past. We also learn that she was in a relationship with a woman named Aisha, and proved to be very caring through her actions multiple times.
Naturally, Aisha is also an LGBTQ character, but since she barely appears, we won’t list her as a separate character.
Simon Talmadge
Lastly, Simon Talmadge appeared as a character in the RPG/card-based combat game,’ Harry Potter: Magic Awakened.’ Although the game takes place ten years after the Battle of Hogwarts, we meet Simon as a ghost of a boy who lived back in the early 1800s. He died at the age of 16 and remained a ghost in Hogwarts afterwards.
Both as a Muggle and a Hogwarts student, Simon was bullied and had no real friends, so he found companionship in portraits – which he also drew himself. After a bully named Mabel attacked Simon in school, a boy named Gwydion Idris stood up for him and defended him. Simon had feelings for Gwydion ever since, although he never got the chance to act upon those feelings.
