‘Harry Potter’ Just Gave Fans Their Best Look Yet at Harry’s Redesigned Scar Ahead of HBO’s Christmas Debut

The countdown to Hogwarts is officially underway, and it is bringing more than nostalgia with it. Warner Bros. Discovery has turned September 1, the date Hogwarts students traditionally return to school, into a global celebration spanning cinemas, live events, retail activations, and fan gatherings across multiple continents. This year’s festivities also mark the 25th anniversary of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,’ with the original film returning to theaters worldwide for one week alongside all eight movies in the franchise.

At the center of it all is a first of its kind London event, taking place at Old Billingsgate on Tuesday, September 1, where Platform 9¾ will take over the venue for a single day filled with magical experiences, photo opportunities, and surprises. According to organizers, this marks the first time a Back to Hogwarts celebration has been built specifically around the upcoming HBO series rather than the film franchise, a clear sign of how much promotional weight is now shifting toward the new show.

That shift became very visible this week. Collider reported that HBO has officially revealed a major change to Harry’s most iconic feature, with Dominic McLaughlin sporting a noticeably rougher, more realistic version of the lightning bolt scar than fans are used to. The updated bolt appeared prominently in the Back to Hogwarts promotional material and is clearly distinct from Daniel Radcliffe’s scar from the original eight films. It is also being called the clearest look yet at the redesigned mark, all part of confirming that the new ‘Harry Potter’ will visually diverge from Radcliffe’s take on the Boy Who Lived.

This is not the first time the scar has sparked conversation. When HBO shared an earlier first look at McLaughlin in costume, some fans took issue with the scar’s placement, noting that it sat closer to his temple rather than the center of his forehead the way Radcliffe’s did, and that the mark itself looked considerably fainter. Others have pointed out that the new design leans more toward an actual lightning bolt shape and even resembles a Lichtenberg figure, moving away from what many felt looked more like a drawn on “N” in the films.

Warner Bros. is clearly using the redesign as one piece of a larger effort to differentiate this ‘Harry Potter’ remake, alongside an overhauled story structure that expands beyond McLaughlin’s Harry to give more attention to the wider Hogwarts cast. The series stars McLaughlin in his acting debut after beating out more than 30,000 young hopefuls in an open casting call, with John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape rounding out the adult cast. Each season is expected to adapt a single book from J.K. Rowling’s series, part of a full decade long commitment to the source material.

The London celebration is being positioned as the clearest signal yet that promotion for the show is ramping up ahead of release, with Warner Bros. Discovery promising more surprises during the Back to Hogwarts showcase streaming live from the event. HBO’s ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ premieres on HBO and HBO Max this Christmas Day, giving fans just a few more months to brace themselves for a Boy Who Lived who looks a little different than the one they grew up with.

With Radcliffe’s precise, almost cartoonish scar now a thing of the past, does McLaughlin’s rougher, more realistic version feel like a worthy update for a new generation of Potter fans, or does it lose something essential from the character’s most famous mark?
